About The Position

The City of Gresham is seeking experienced applicants for the position of Deputy Fire Marshal 1 or Fire Inspector within the Gresham Fire Department. The selected candidate will be placed in one of the two positions based on their qualifications and experience. The Fire Inspector position is a full-time, regular status vacancy, while the Deputy Fire Marshal 1 position offers a higher salary range and requires more extensive experience. The salary for the Fire Inspector ranges from $86,090 to $108,473 annually, while the Deputy Fire Marshal 1 salary ranges from $90,189 to $119,320 annually. Salary placement will depend on the candidate's education, experience, and relevant certifications. In this role, the successful candidate will participate in various special programs, including fireworks prevention, juvenile fire setter programs, and hazardous materials management. They will provide training and information related to these programs and actively enforce laws and regulations. Collaboration with other organizations to develop fire safety programs, conduct fire drills, and provide employee training will be essential. The candidate will also conduct fire prevention education programs at schools, daycare centers, healthcare facilities, and neighborhood groups, as well as develop and disseminate public education materials regarding fire prevention initiatives. The position involves performing inspections of building plans, ongoing construction, and existing buildings to ensure safety and compliance with fire codes. The candidate will document findings, issue orders for correction, and prepare reports. They will respond to complaints regarding faulty fire alarms, illegal burning, and other hazardous conditions, and will coordinate or perform fire investigation activities to determine the cause of fires, including assisting in the prosecution of arson cases. Representing the City and the assigned department to the public, other agencies, and the media is a key responsibility. The candidate will develop and deliver formal presentations, conduct community outreach, and respond to information requests. Additionally, they will analyze and review federal, state, and local laws and regulations to ensure compliance, conduct research on fire prevention best practices, and formulate recommendations. The role may also involve performing firefighting duties and responsibilities as needed. The candidate will work independently, applying their knowledge and exercising judgment while receiving assistance for new or unusual situations. They will be expected to interpret work unit operating procedures and policies and apply theory to create new procedures or provide input on policy development. Work will be reviewed based on compliance and effectiveness in meeting goals and deadlines, and the candidate may provide technical oversight of lower-level classifications.
