About The Position

Deputy Editorial Page Editor, San Francisco Chronicle Tired of bad takes on the internet? Help us put out some good ones. We're trying to reinvent local opinion journalism for the digital age. In your capacity as Deputy, you'll help shape a vision for the future of the Bay Area and think of new ways to harness The Chronicle's bully pulpit to make that vision a reality. You'll edit daily editorials and op-eds and be deeply involved in the editorial board's endorsement process, interviewing candidates and deciding who should stay and who should go. You'll discover diverse new voices and help get them a start in the world of journalism. You'll also help craft ambitious enterprise journalism projects designed to make an impact. If and when the mood strikes you, there will be opportunities to try your turn writing columns as well.

Requirements

• At least three years of experience at a daily newspaper, magazine, or web publication.
• Strong organizational skills akin to a managing editor.
• Ability to turn ideas into action.
• Digital-first mindset with familiarity or willingness to learn print production.
• Fluency with the politics of the Bay Area and its diverse communities.
• Ability to line edit and fact check quickly without sacrificing voice.
• Understanding of how to use audience data to guide journalistic decisions.
