About The Position

We are seeking a talented professional editor responsible for working in concert with the journal’s team of academic Deputy Editors to publish high-quality, peer-reviewed science in the Journal under the direction of the Editor.

Requirements

  • Publishing experience: The Deputy Editor shall have a record of authorship of scientific papers published in peer-reviewed journals. Additionally, experience serving as a reviewer, editor, publication manager, and/or science communicator will be considered.
  • Education: The Deputy Editor will possess a graduate degree (PhD or MD). Preference will be given to expertise in cancer research or medical imaging. The Deputy Editor should demonstrate an understanding of recent trends and developments in the field as well as a breadth of interest in scientific research, both within and beyond their specialty.
  • Judgment and Accountability: The Deputy Editor must possess solid and sound judgment skills and the willingness to be held accountable for the editorial decisions rendered through the publishing process. The DE should demonstrate the ability to read and assess the novelty, context and implications of research submitted to the journal from different areas of this discipline.
  • Professionalism: The Deputy Editor must be able to uphold the reputation of RSNA Journals, the ethical guidelines for scholarly publishing, and the rigors and timelines of scientific publishing practices with diplomacy and professionalism.
  • Interpersonal skills: The Deputy Editor must have excellent written and spoken communication to work well with various stakeholders, including RSNA staff, editorial board members, and authors.
  • Must be willing to travel up to 10%, as needed

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the academic Deputy Editors to determine the selection, revision, and rejection of proffered manuscripts, with final approval by the Editor.
  • Make well-reasoned editorial decisions on submitted manuscripts in the light of expert advice and clearly and professionally communicate these decisions and their rationale verbally and in writing.
  • Discuss manuscripts and reviewer comments with the editorial board during weekly meetings.
  • Ensure efficient, transparent, and accurate peer-review and editorial assessment of manuscripts within established turnaround time goals by closely monitoring the content management system and attending weekly meetings with the Editor and peer review manager.
  • Ensure quality of all content published in, or in connection with the Journal. Most importantly, review the accuracy and veracity of the scientific and academic content and the scientific credibility of manuscripts accepted for publication in the journals, including ensuring that any such research has been conducted in accordance with industry standard methodology and practice and has complied in full with all applicable guidelines and ethical standards.
  • Expand the reach of the journal by soliciting editorials and reviews and writing and/or editing non-scholarly content (e.g., social media posts).
  • Meet with the editorial board during the Society’s annual meeting and at other times when necessary to review policies and procedures.
  • Represent RSNA and its journals at society meetings, other conferences, and radiology department visits, including occasional presentations.
  • Propose and work on other duties as assigned.
