About The Position

The Deputy Director (DD) at Birmingham Zoo Inc. (BZI) is a vital member of the Executive Team, collaborating closely with the CEO and CFO to develop strategic plans and goals that drive the vision and innovation of the organization. The DD oversees a wide range of business operations, including educational and conservation programs, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and the effective management of various departments such as Operations, Maintenance, Learning and Engagement, Living Collection, and Animal Care.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university; Master's Degree preferred.
  • Four to six years of experience in an upper management level position in a similar organization.
  • Five years of general management experience in a public or private zoological park or equivalent experience.
  • Broad-based knowledge of biological collections and informal education.
  • Proven communication, leadership, and relationship-building skills.
  • Experience managing a complex organizational and financial structure.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing the strategic plan and goals for BZI.
  • Oversee operational, educational, and conservation programs.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal standards for animal collection and conservation.
  • Support the Learning & Engagement department and promote a culture of continuous learning and inclusivity.
  • Define financial objectives and manage budgets for areas of responsibility.
  • Monitor industry trends and ensure efficient departmental structures and operations.
  • Implement and monitor risk management policies and safety protocols.
  • Engage with the community and participate in fundraising activities.
  • Provide reports to the Board of Directors and act as the Zoo's representative in the absence of the CEO.
