About The Position

The Deputy Director of Contraceptive Research and Development at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will lead the Contraceptive Technology team within the Women's Health Innovations (WHI) division. This role is critical for advancing the foundation's contraceptive technology strategy, managing a complex portfolio of investments, and ensuring impactful outcomes. The position requires strategic thinking, leadership, and exceptional relationship management skills to drive initiatives that improve health and economic outcomes for women and girls.

Requirements

  • Advanced degree required (MD and/or PhD) in a women's health field or relevant life science.
  • At least 10 years of significant leadership experience in research and development of drugs, medical devices, or drug-device combination products.
  • Experience in leading teams in early and late phase clinical development or medical affairs with significant interactions in women's health, preferably contraception.
  • Proven ability to manage effectively across a complex matrix organization with multiple stakeholders.
  • Experience in most phases of product development within the pharma/biotech industry and familiarity with regulatory requirements.
  • Strong knowledge of biopharmaceutical industry and end-to-end drug/device development, manufacturing, and launch.
  • Analytical skills to interpret clinical and preclinical data and problem-solve using data-driven methods.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with experience presenting to senior leaders.
  • Ability to build and manage high-profile external relationships.

Responsibilities

  • Lead overall Contraceptive technology health initiative within WHI, including strategy development and operational execution.
  • Manage the contraceptive technology team and oversee a growing portfolio of investments focused on contraceptive technologies.
  • Make strategic, data-driven decisions in settings with incomplete information.
  • Provide oversight for WHI funded activities implemented by matrix partners within the foundation.
  • Design new strategies and implementation plans to ensure impact and sustainability.
  • Manage a program that aligns with foundation strategy and integrates with WHI program strategy team and other programs.
  • Own decision-making for all grant approvals and review concept notes and grant proposals.
  • Consult with grantees and partners to maximize project impact and ensure alignment with strategy goals.
  • Represent the foundation with key external constituencies and manage high-profile partner relationships.
  • Hire and manage talent needed to achieve PST and foundation goals.
  • Contribute to WHI Leadership team and collaborate across the WHI team to achieve goals.
