About The Position

The Deputy Coroner is responsible for identifying deceased individuals in Dorchester County and determining the cause and manner of death. This role involves performing administrative and clerical duties to ensure efficient office operations, responding to death calls, conducting investigations, and collaborating with various professionals to gather necessary information. The Deputy Coroner serves at the pleasure of the Coroner and may be required to work on-call, providing essential services to the community.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • At least three years of experience in death investigation, nursing, paramedic work, or related fields; or a two-year associate degree with two years of experience; or a four-year degree with one year of experience; or certification as a law enforcement officer with two years of experience.
  • Valid state driver's license required.
  • Completion of online Law Enforcement Class III course within 6 months of hire.
  • Notary Public certification within one year of hire.
  • Completion of 16 hours of annual training as a Deputy Coroner.

  • Experience in forensic studies or autopsy assistance.
  • Knowledge of legal procedures related to death investigations.

Responsibilities

  • Responds to calls regarding a death and obtains essential information for official reports.
  • Visits death scenes to document findings and consult with family and professionals.
  • Issues subpoenas for medical records or evidence as necessary.
  • Determines the identity of the deceased and establishes the time of death.
  • Collects fingerprints, blood samples, and other evidence for investigations.
  • Schedules and assists with autopsies, creating necessary documentation.
  • Completes death certificates and Coroner's reports.
  • Coordinates with agencies for child death case reviews as per state statutes.
  • Provides information and assistance to family members of the deceased.
  • Testifies in court regarding cases as required.
  • Issues burial, removal, transit, or cremation permits as appropriate.
  • Performs general administrative and clerical work as needed.
