Responsibilities

  • Research, draft, review, and negotiate contracts and agreements including inter-local agreements, land transactions, and employment contracts.
  • Draft, review, evaluate, revise, and recommend City ordinances, policies, and procedures.
  • Perform legal research and provide legal opinions to educate various departments and agencies.
  • Review, evaluate, negotiate, and consult on claims and court complaints filed against the City.
  • Prepare, file, research, and represent the City in administrative agency and appellate actions.
  • Review, analyze, and file pleadings in court actions; perform discovery and evidence preparation.
  • Serve as the City's counsel in court appearances, mediation, and negotiations.
  • Prepare trial dockets and screen misdemeanor cases for evidence and witness notifications.
  • Conduct traffic and in-custody arraignments.
  • Advise and facilitate communication between client agencies and external agencies.
  • Coordinate and interact with various local, state, and federal agencies.
  • Participate in meetings and provide legal advice to department staff and board members.
  • Provide training to City employees and professional groups.
  • Maintain awareness of new trends in municipal law and incorporate developments as appropriate.
