About The Position

The NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) promotes the safety of all people that build, work, and live in New York City by regulating the lawful use of over one million buildings and construction sites across the five boroughs. With a focus on safety, service, and integrity, the Department enforces the City’s Construction Codes, Zoning Resolution, and the New York State Multiple Dwelling Law. The Deputy Chief of Staff works closely with Department leadership to fulfill DOB’s mission and key goals. This involves planning for and implementing organizational and policy improvements, including serving in a project management role to ensure coordination throughout the agency. Under direction, performs highly confidential and responsible administrative work directly for Chief of Staff:

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and four years of full-time professional experience in policy analysis and/or development or in the assigned areas, at least one year of which must have been in an administrative, managerial, consultative or executive capacity or supervising personnel performing activities related to the duties of the position; or
  • Education and/or experience equivalent to “1” above. However, all candidates must have the one year of administrative, managerial, consultative, executive or supervisory experience as described in “1” above.

Responsibilities

  • Managing multiple projects for the Chief of Staff simultaneously, including planning, coordination with stakeholders, follow-up, and reporting
  • Act as liaison between the Department of Buildings and Office of the Mayor, including the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Housing and Planning
  • Serve as an advisor to the Commissioner and agency executives on policy matters
  • Conduct analyses and create legislative, policy and/or rulemaking strategies to address any gaps or weaknesses in current strategies and to establish new strategies to improve agency functions
  • Participate in strategic scheduling of events, meetings, and other requests to balance and address key objectives
  • Work with constituents to communicate matters related to Department protocol, initiatives, or other plans; ensure coordination between stakeholders in the implementation of projects, including internal stakeholders on cross-functional teams.
  • Plan, assign, and review the work of subordinates (as assigned), and is responsible to the Chief of Staff for the satisfactory completion of the work assigned
  • Represent the Commissioner and Chief of Staff at meetings, events, and conferences
