About The Position

The Oregon Department of Corrections (ODOC) is seeking an accomplished physician leader to serve as Deputy Chief of Medicine, a key executive role responsible for advancing clinical excellence across the statewide correctional health system. Reporting directly to the DOC Chief of Medicine, the Deputy Chief of Medicine provides strategic leadership, clinical oversight, and operational supervision for ODOC physicians, physician assistants, advanced practice providers, and assigned clinical staff across multiple institutions. This role ensures all patient care delivered within ODOC facilities meets established community standards of care, adheres to evidence-based practice, and is provided in a timely, efficient, and accountable manner. The Deputy Chief of Medicine is instrumental in maintaining clinical quality, strengthening medical governance, and supporting a culture of professional excellence and continuous improvement.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical school with board certification in a recognized specialty and an unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Oregon, or the ability to obtain licensure prior to appointment.
  • AND a minimum of one year of management experience leading multidisciplinary teams such as Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Associate Medical Director, or other leadership role.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated experience leading or participating in clinical quality improvement, infection control, peer review, mortality review, or other clinical governance processes.
  • Experience providing clinical leadership or oversight across multiple facilities and implementing consistent clinical standards, policies and practices across systems or organizations.
  • Experience leading continuous quality improvement initiatives, infection control programs, or other patient safety efforts designed to improve clinical outcomes and reduce variation in care.
  • Experience reviewing complex clinical cases related to mortality review, adverse events, or legal litigation matters and collaborating with legal or executive leadership on clinical risk issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary clinical committees or governance groups focused on clinical decision making, policy development or utilization review therapeutic levels of care.
  • Strong ability to mentor and support physician leaders, build alignment among clinical teams, and translate clinical evidence and standards into practical operational guidance.
  • Board certification in a specialty recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties
  • Experience working in a correctional environment

Responsibilities

  • Provide executive-level supervision and mentorship to physicians and mid-level providers.
  • Ensure clinical services align with community standards, regulatory requirements, and best practices.
  • Oversee timely completion of medical evaluations, procedures, and treatment plans.
  • Partner with the Chief of Medicine to shape and implement statewide clinical policies, procedures, and operational strategies.
  • Collaborate closely with Health Services Administrators and Clinical Chiefs to ensure coordinated, high-quality healthcare delivery across all institutions.
  • Support quality assurance, risk management, peer review, and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Promote interdisciplinary collaboration and patient-centered care for adults in custody.
