About The Position

This position supports the Building Official in planning, organizing and supervising the construction plan submittal, approval and permit issuance process; in providing case management of complex building construction applications; in supervising and coordinating the provision of efficient and effective service delivery to customers; in directing the work of assigned staff.

Requirements

  • Five (5) years of directly related, increasingly responsible experience as a Municipal Building Inspector/Plan Examiner.
  • Registered with the State of Michigan as a Building Inspector/Plan Examiner and Building Official, or certified as a Building Official through the International Code Council (ICC).
  • In-depth knowledge of applicable state and federal laws/regulations, Michigan Building Codes and related standards.
  • Demonstrated administrative, organizational, and problem-solving skills; leadership and conflict-resolution skills; exceptional interpersonal and communication skills; observable dedication to public service and the health and safety of the public.
  • Valid state driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Assigns and directs work to Building Division staff to ensure that timely and thorough inspections and plan reviews are conducted.
  • Monitors workflow; reviews and evaluates work products, methods and procedures; meets with staff to identify and resolve problems and correct deficiencies.
  • Maintains active working relationships with owners/developers during all phases of development.
  • Assists citizens with any questions that arise throughout construction.
  • Performs preliminary plan reviews for life safety systems and hazardous occupancies.
  • Performs and/or oversees inspections during all phases of building construction and technical construction plan reviews for projects.
  • Writes departmental reports, evaluations, and inspection reports.
  • Maintains knowledge of building materials, methods and code changes.
  • Prepares and presents case information for variance requests.
  • Provides direction to staff on issues involving legal action and, as needed, testifies in court.
  • Assists with the preparation of a proposed budget for the Building Division, with justification.
  • Serves as Building Division staff liaison to the Zoning Board of Appeals, including preparation of residential cases and commercial sign cases.
  • Assumes all responsibilities of Building Official in their absence.
  • Perform related duties as required.
