About The Position

Join the Colorado School of Public Health as a Department Manager (Business Services Program Manager). This position is a key member of the school’s Department of Health Systems, Management & Policy (HSMP), which leads scientific research, graduate education, and public service activities designed to optimize health and wellbeing by improving the organization, financing, and delivery of health services in American and global health systems. The Department Manager will provide critical administrative support by providing fiscal management of funds from different sources, monitoring budgets, supporting human and capital resources, event planning, and managing the day-to-day operations of the department. This position plays a major role in proactively anticipating related issues/problems, suggesting a range of options with an analysis of advantages and disadvantages, and recommending solutions to the Department Chair. This position will work with department faculty to manage support for educational, research, and service activities and serve as the primary liaison among departmental faculty and various other ColoradoSPH departments and CU Anschutz organizational units. This is a full-time (1.0 FTE) position that reports to the Department Chair.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in business, business administration, finance, accounting, education, social sciences, healthcare administration, public administration, communications, information systems, or a directly related field from an accredited institution.
  • Four years of extensive, diverse, and progressively responsible professional experience.
  • Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year-for-year basis.
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States without requiring sponsorship.
  • Outstanding organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize and multi-task
  • Demonstrated ability to self-manage priorities and be proactive in resolving issues
  • Advanced technical knowledge of business and accounting practices, including knowledge and use of accounting systems.
  • Proficiency in financial management and the ability to manage funds from a variety of sources.
  • Ability to summarize, analyze and interpret financial data, including proficiency with using Microsoft Excel and related spreadsheet applications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively via written and verbal communication with faculty members, professional staff, and constituents.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
  • Outstanding customer service and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to plan, organize, implement, and coordinate complex operational activities.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in business administration, accounting, finance, public health, education, social sciences, or related field.
  • Three (3) years of experience at the management level, including direct responsibility for HR or financial systems such as PeopleSoft HRMS, Concur and/or Marketplace within a complex health-related research or higher education setting.
  • Experience in health policy, healthcare management, human resources and/or financial management.
  • Experience with procurement procedures used in university and/or state government institutions.

Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day support to the Department Chair and the program directors of the department’s graduate and professional education programs.
  • Coordinate applications to the graduate and professional education programs; create student tracking systems.
  • Manage tuition and scholarship funding allocations and awards for graduate and professional education programs.
  • Support assignment of faculty advisors for students; assist with scheduling advising meetings and other curriculum committee meetings.
  • Assist with hiring of student employees and teaching assistants.
  • Provide fiscal management of funds by creating department budgets in conjunction with Department Chair.
  • Monitor all assigned budgets/funds by preparing reports and projections on a recurring basis and reviewing to ensure all expenditures are appropriate.
  • Review and approve all procurement transactions for the department (purchases, contracts, monthly commercial card expenses); serve as resource to faculty and staff regarding purchasing and travel policies.
  • Manage the payroll processing for faculty and staff.
  • Manage the calendar of the Department Chair; schedule and coordinate departmental activities (student events, seminars, workshops, annual performance reviews, short courses, visiting faculty, student receptions, etc.).
  • Serve as the primary communication liaison between the department and other ColoradoSPH/CU Anschutz units.
  • Support the onboarding process for faculty, staff, and student employees of the department.
