About The Position

Purdue University invites applications for the position of Head of the Department of Biological Sciences, with a start date in July 2025. The department is seeking a dynamic leader who possesses a creative vision and an outstanding record in research, administration, and teaching. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing leadership to support existing preeminent research programs while also launching new high-impact growth areas. This role involves leading efforts to attract, mentor, and retain high-achieving faculty, fostering an inclusive environment, and preparing students to become scientific leaders. Additionally, the Department Head will manage substantial budgets and advocate for the Department's mission to both internal and external stakeholders, which includes cultivating long-term relationships with alumni and engaging in fundraising activities. Enhancing the ongoing efforts of the University and College to build interdisciplinary programs is also a key responsibility. The Department of Biological Sciences encompasses a broad array of innovative research areas, ranging from subcellular to ecosystem scales, and offers diverse, creative educational programs. Interdisciplinary and collaborative research is not only supported but encouraged within the department and across the university. Many faculty members are involved in university-wide multidisciplinary research initiatives, such as those through Discovery Park and the Purdue Institute for Cancer Research. Faculty members also play leading roles in various institutes, including the Purdue Institute for Integrative Neuroscience and the Purdue Institute of Inflammation, Immunology, and Infectious Disease. Furthermore, the department engages in translational and industrial partnerships, including patent development and the One Health initiative. As of Fall 2024, the Biological Sciences Department comprises 57 faculty members, 55 staff members, 7 lecturers, 32 post-doctoral researchers, 146 graduate students, and 1244 undergraduate biology majors.
