Requirements

  • Master's degree
  • Prior teaching and leadership experience
  • Dynamic leadership qualities that build strong relationships with students and staff
  • Clear communication skills (both written and oral)
  • TLAD, GADM, or PRIN endorsement required for Department Chair portion
  • MATH endorsement required for teaching portion
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents such as correspondence, surveys, and electronic media
  • Ability to write reports and other professional communications
  • Ability to present information effectively and to respond to questions from individuals and groups
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and community members
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in written form
  • Ability to complete mathematical operations and apply concepts of basic mathematics
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
  • Ability to maintain current job skills as directed, especially in technology-related activities
  • Ability to perform essential duties with an awareness of school district requirements and School Board policies

Responsibilities

  • Establish and promote high standards and expectations for academic performance consistent with the philosophy, mission, values and goals of the school and district.
  • Provide instructional leadership for the department
  • Coordinator and supervise department curriculum development and assist in program evaluations
  • Conduct licensed staff member evaluations which focus on professional practice and student growth
  • Identify staff needs related to the improvement of instruction thru professional development
  • Represent the department in recommending changes in instructional materials and/or the addition of new courses
  • Conduct department meetings on a regular basis
  • Organize, manage, evaluate, and supervise effective and clear procedures for the operation and functioning of the department consistent with the philosophy, mission, values and goals of the school and district.
  • Maintain appropriate supervision of staff
  • Maintain an inventory of capital equipment, materials and supplies
  • Prepare the annual departmental budget and administer said budget
  • Convey to the members of the department the deliberations of the Instructional Council
  • Aid the Guidance Department in the proper placement of students
  • As needed, organize and manage efforts to recruit and retain student enrollment
  • Participate in the building sectioning and staffing process
  • Assist in the selection of new teachers and the establishment of teaching assignments within the Department
  • Assist in the orientation of new teachers
  • Screen student teachers and assign them to appropriate staff members
  • Assist substitute teachers as needed to support student outcomes
  • Supervise and evaluate non-licensed staff when applicable
  • Serve in an advisory capacity to the Principal as a member of the Instructional Council
  • Convey to the Principal the challenges identified by departmental staff
  • Meet with the Assistant Superintendent for Instruction and other District Staff as requested
  • As needed, assist in the establishment of summer school course offerings and the assignment of summer school staff
  • Participate in articulation activities with the associate elementary school districts
  • Represent the department and discipline at community and evening events
  • Attend Building and District meetings as requested
  • Maintain the highest level of ethical and professional demeanor with students and staff consistent with the Sexual Harassment, Equal Educational Opportunity, Ethics, Use of Electronic Media, and other appropriate policies of the District.
