About The Position

The Department of Psychology at the University of Tulsa is seeking an accomplished and enthusiastic individual eligible to be hired at the rank of Professor (with tenure) to serve as the Psychology Department Chair. With an endowment in excess of $1.3 billion, the University of Tulsa is experiencing significant transformation, including a new strategic plan that aims to leverage the University's strengths to become a top 100 private research institution. This strategic plan focuses on the University's role in fostering the next generation of diverse researchers, scholars, creators, and entrepreneurs across all fields by offering unprecedented resources and support to attract the best students, while moving from R2 to R1 status. The Department seeks an inspiring and thoughtful leader to work in collaboration with the other faculty to develop a department vision that aligns with this plan. The position will begin on or before August 15th, 2025. The undergraduate program in Psychology is the largest major in Kendall College of Arts and Science, with 220 majors and 85 minors, and is growing. Class sizes are small, with most under 25 students. The undergraduates at Tulsa are excellent, including the highest percentage of National Merit Scholars in the country. The Psychology major affords students outstanding learning opportunities in and out of the classroom, including funded research with faculty through the Tulsa Undergraduate Research Challenge program, community engagement in the Community Psychology Practicum course, and study abroad courses in Ghana and Nepal. All Psychology faculty contribute to the undergraduate program. The I-O graduate program at TU offers 2-year MA and 5-year PhD degrees, with combined cohorts of 6-10 students per year. The curriculum embraces the scientist-practitioner model, emphasizing methodological, theoretical, and professional rigor grounded in a “psychologist first” understanding of the discipline. Our graduates readily find employment in a variety of applied settings and some in academia. All doctoral students are actively engaged in research beyond the dissertation, and MA students are encouraged to engage in research. The I-O faculty currently consists of two Assistant Professors and one Associate Professor, and the program maintains close collaborations with area businesses including Hogan Assessment Systems headquartered in Tulsa. The Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program offers a 2.5 year MA and a 6-year Ph.D degree; the Ph.D. program at TU is APA-accredited and adheres to the scientist-practitioner model. Our goal is to train professionally competent clinical psychologists with a broad background in the field of psychology who can apply psychological theory, assessment, research methodology, and clinical skill to complex clinical problems. Students go on to obtain both clinical and academic positions in child and adult specialties. The program has a community training clinic as part of TU's True Blue Neighbors Program that provides free therapy and psychological assessment services for all ages, with an emphasis on underserved populations, including services in Spanish. The Clinical faculty currently consists of one Applied Assistant Professor, one Assistant Professor, two Associate Professors, and three Full Professors. The program maintains close relationships with outside agencies for practica including Veterans Services, Indigenous/Tribal Nations behavioral health clinics, hospitals, private practices, mental health clinics, research clinical trials, and correctional facilities. The University of Tulsa is a small, private university with approximately 4000 undergraduate and graduate students, located in midtown Tulsa, approximately 2 miles from downtown. Both areas are undergoing an exciting period of growth and are home to vibrant art and music scenes. Tulsa is a mid-sized city with a population of around 400,000, known for being family-friendly and affordable, with easy access to urban, suburban, and rural areas. The city is nestled in an area where the Muscogee Creek, Cherokee, and Osage tribal territories share a common boundary. Tulsa is also home to The Gathering Place, an expansive riverside park, that has been recognized as one of the world's greatest places. Oklahoma is geographically diverse, including plains, grasslands, rocky mesas, and mountains, and is culturally unique as it is home to 39 federally recognized Native American tribes.
