About The Position

The Doe Fund is a leading New York City non-profit organization that operates the enormously visible Ready, Willing & Able (RWA) program, whose participants clean over 115 miles of streets and sidewalks every day. With an $80 million budget, 500+ staff members, and 46,000 individual donors, The Doe Fund is nationally acclaimed as a work-based model for solving homelessness and criminal recidivism. We empower people to break the cycles of homelessness, welfare dependency, substance abuse, and incarceration through innovative work and housing programs. The New York City Department of Environmental Protection protects public health and the environment by managing the city’s water supply, wastewater treatment, stormwater, and climate resilience infrastructure. DEP leads efforts to reduce flooding, improve water quality, and build sustainable infrastructure across New York City. The Doe Fund and DEP have partnered to create a program that trains and employs New Yorkers to maintain rain gardens and green infrastructure that reduce flooding and protect neighborhood streets. Participants gain paid, hands-on experience for those interested in environmental maintenance and public works.

Requirements

  • High school diploma required; associate or bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Experience supervising field crews in landscaping, green infrastructure, parks maintenance, public works, or similar outdoor operations.
  • Ability to plan and oversee daily field execution across multiple sites/locations, including tasking, coordination, and quality follow-through.
  • Comfortable using mobile tools for field-based data entry and photo documentation.
  • Able to communicate clearly and professionally with partner organizations and community members; strong written documentation skills.
  • Valid driver’s license with minimum 3 years of satisfactory driving history and ability to operate program vehicles as needed.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and provide occasional nights, weekends, or holiday support for meetings, events, or Emergency Response as required.
  • Experience with stormwater/green infrastructure assets (rain gardens, bioswales, tree pits, etc.); experience working under City/agency contract reporting requirements; experience supporting workforce development participants.

Responsibilities

  • Field Operations & Service Delivery: Oversee daily crew deployment and on-the-ground coordination across assigned zone(s) to ensure timely, contract-compliant maintenance and operations.
  • Quality Control & Issue Reporting: Monitor rain garden conditions and promptly document and escalate emergencies, safety hazards, and unusual conditions—including dead, stolen, or damaged plants—to the City’s program oversight team.
  • Emergency & Special Response: Support 24-hour emergency readiness and coordinate rapid response to urgent issues and special directives, including securing hazards and reporting unsafe conditions.
  • Team Leadership & Performance: Inspect and direct maintenance crews and other field staff on daily assignment, provide hands-on support and reinforce consistent, high-quality service. Collaborate with the management team to ensure company goals are met in compliance with the contract.
  • Safety & Compliance: Enforce safety standards, provide coaching, and recommend disciplinary action. Ensure and promote safe work practices with the crew’s proper use of PPE, tools, vehicles, and equipment while meeting contract and jobsite expectations.
  • Reporting & Data Management: Ensure accurate daily field documentation in the city-approved, online-accessible system, including inspection entries, confirmation of services performed, and time-stamped before/after photos.
  • Field Technology Readiness: Ensure field staff have mobile technology and reliable high-speed internet access to complete required reporting and documentation, escalate IT issues or technical restraints to Field Operations Manager.
  • Outreach & Event Support: Maintain working relationships with partner organizations; support notifications, surveys, and community outreach activities as directed, and help with special events as needed.
  • Meetings & Program Coordination: Attend meetings as directed (including outside regular hours with advance notice when required ) and support workforce development tracking in partnership with the management team.
