About The Position

The Staff Dentist will provide comprehensive dental care to Veterans through a mobile dental clinic pilot program operated in coordination with the White River Junction VA Medical Center. This role delivers patient-centered dental services while supporting clinic operations, quality assurance, and program development.

Requirements

  • Licensed dental practitioner specializing in dentistry and the treatment of diseases, injuries, and conditions of the oral cavity and craniofacial complex.
  • Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from a school approved by the American Dental Association (ADA), Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA), or a U.S. Department of Education–recognized accrediting body.
  • Successful completion of the National Board Dental Examinations (NBDE) administered by the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE).
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in the State of Vermont.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of creditable experience as a full-time practicing clinical dentist.
  • Recent experience serving a diverse adult patient population; VA dental clinic experience preferred.
  • Strong ability to prioritize multiple tasks based on deadlines and scope.
  • Self-directed, detail-oriented, and highly organized with strong time and project management skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to convey complex clinical information clearly.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of evidence-based dental practices and industry best practices.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 Office applications and electronic health record systems.
  • Current unrestricted U.S. driver’s license and ability to operate a mobile dental clinic (CDL not required).
  • Willingness to meet all VA vehicle operation requirements, including completion of required training per VA Directive 0637.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification from an American Heart Association–approved program

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive dental examinations, diagnoses, and treatment planning.
  • Provide phased dental care, including acute, disease control, definitive treatment, and maintenance.
  • Perform restorative dentistry (including implants), preventive care, oral surgery, endodontics, prosthodontics, and periodontics within scope of licensure.
  • Stabilize and treat acute dental conditions such as infection or trauma.
  • Manage post-operative care and follow-up treatment plans.
  • Collaborate with VA dental and medical staff for care not completed in the mobile clinic.
  • Supervise dental hygienists and dental assistants per state dental board regulations.
  • Assign and oversee staff duties.
  • Verify Veteran dental eligibility and render Class III and Class VI eligibility determinations.
  • Address patient concerns and complaints with appropriate documentation and follow-up.
  • Document all care using VA Electronic Health Record (EHR) and Dental EHR systems.
  • Ensure compliance with VA policies, HIPAA, VHA directives, OSHA, and Joint Commission standards.
  • Follow all VA medication policies; no sample medications permitted.
  • Participate in peer reviews and complex case discussions.
  • Identify operational inefficiencies and support process improvement initiatives.
  • Assist in developing quality control measures and standard operating procedures.
  • Support pilot program reporting and performance metrics.
