About The Position

Basic Purpose: Under general direction, performs professional dental treatment in the planning and execution of a comprehensive program of preventive dentistry by developing and administering a dental care and treatment program, including diagnostic, prosthetic, surgical, endodontic, periodontal, preventive, and restorative dentistry, for a state correctional institution or facility. Typical Functions: Develops and administers a program of preventive dentistry within the institution; participates in the integration of the dental program with other programs of the institution. Determines the oral health of the patient and the adjacent structures through the use of visual, digital, and x-ray examinations. If pathology exists, a treatment plan is recommended and followed through with the necessary operative procedures to eliminate or control such pathology within guidelines. Performs dental procedures, including basic cleanings, fillings and repairs, extractions, limited endodontics, and dentures. Evaluates oral pathology and makes appropriate referrals to oral surgery referral clinic. Supervises and/or administers prophylaxis and instruction in oral hygiene. Supervises dental hygienists and dental assistants. Instructs dental assistants or other dental personnel in records and maintenance, dental instrument security, proper sterilization of equipment and dental tools, storage, maintenance and disposal, and care of equipment and quarters. Ensures strict adherence to the State of Oklahoma Dental Practice Act and the Board of Dentistry’s Rules and Regulations. Implements infection control procedures in accordance with current Occupational Safety Health Administration, American Dental Association guidelines and ODOC operating procedures. Level Descriptor: This job family consists of one level; this is the full performance level. Incumbents are responsible for performing all functions and activities, including the diagnosis, treatment, management, and coordination of services related to patients’ oral health needs.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of modern dentistry and oral hygiene, and of state legislation regarding the provision of dental services
  • Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices
  • Knowledge of the application of interpersonal communication
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to develop programs within policy limits
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to apply improved techniques and procedures in all phases of the dental program
  • Ability to prepare and present educational programs
  • Licensure to practice dentistry in the state of Oklahoma
  • One year of experience in general dentistry
  • Current Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs (OBNDD) certificate
  • Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) certificate prescribing scheduled drugs
