About The Position

The Oral Maxillofacial Surgery dental officer serves as a practicing dentist who performs a full range of professional dental procedures in connection with the treatment of commonly encountered dental diseases or dental health problems requiring standard corrective, restorative, or preventive measures. The facility provides care to approximately 91,000 veterans in the midlands and upstate South Carolina, with Community-Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) located in Anderson, Greenville, Spartanburg, Florence, Orangeburg, Sumter, and Rock Hill, offering primary care, mental health, and telemedicine services. Dorn VAMC is affiliated with the University of South Carolina (USC) School of Medicine and provides teaching services for students and residents. The individual will be experienced and competent in all aspects of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS), including but not limited to dentoalveolar surgery and complex dental extractions, treatment of orofacial infections, treatment of orofacial trauma, pre-prosthetic surgery, placement of dental implants, diagnostic procedures consistent with the practice of OMS, surgical treatment of oral and maxillofacial pathosis, treatment of orofacial fractures, diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular dysfunction, surgical reconstruction of acquired or developmental oral-facial anomalies, treatment of functional impairments by surgical means, treatment of cosmetic defects resulting from service trauma, treatment of orthognathic deformities, and grafting procedures including harvesting of graft material consistent with the practice of OMS. The individual must be proficient in assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and post-treatment care in all the above areas. Additionally, the individual must be certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and be trained and competent in providing IV conscious sedation. They must be able to manage medically complex patients, including inpatients, and to perform a history and physical. The individual must be able to work collegially with other dentists and physicians and should possess the skills, both interpersonal and professional, to collaborate effectively with other dental specialties. The scope of practice that a specific provider may perform is defined through the medical center credentialing and privileging process. The work schedule is Monday to Friday, from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, subject to change based on agency needs. A compressed work schedule may be discussed depending on the needs of the Dental Service, but telework is not available, and this is not a virtual position.
