About The Position

The mission of Ravenswood Family Health Network (RFHN) is to improve the health of the community by providing culturally sensitive, integrated primary and preventative health care to all, regardless of ability to pay or immigration status, and collaborating with community partners to address the social determinants of health. Ravenswood Family Dentistry (RFD) is a dental clinic located in Redwood City with additional locations in East Palo Alto and satellite locations on the Mobile van, The Primary School and the operating room. We offer dental care to people of all ages, regardless of their ability to pay. As a multi-cultural community dental clinic, our goal is to provide excellent comprehensive dental care to our patients and promote oral health. POSITION SUMMARY Under the direct supervision of the Dental Clinic Manager, the Dental Sterilization Technician performs and participates in decontamination, cleaning, assembling, sterilization, storage and distribution of reusable dental and surgical instrumentation and equipment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Previous experience in a healthcare dental clinic setting is preferred, particularly in roles related to sterilization or dental assisting.
  • Must have strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high standards of cleanliness and safety.
  • Proficient with computers in a Windows based environment.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Reliable, organized, detail oriented; able to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; to maintain complex records and files; and to meet and deal effectively with the public.
  • Ability to work with all types of clients regardless of their immigration, race, housing or financial status.
  • Ability to create a welcoming and comfortable experience for patients and support the dental team in delivering outstanding care.
  • Commitment to support and implement the philosophy, goals, and objectives of RFHN.
  • Ability to work under pressure and handle multiple tasks.
  • Current BLS (CPR) Certification is required.
  • Up to date with COVID-19 vaccines per current CDC guidelines strongly recommended.

  • Certification or training in infection control is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Decontaminates and sterilizes instruments, medical supplies and equipment, and assembles, wraps and sterilizes trays of instruments.
  • Understands and follows proper Standard Precautions while in decontamination and sterilization areas.
  • Follows OSHA infection control guidelines and RFD infection control policies and procedures.
  • Maintains dental equipment in accordance with manufacturer’s directions and Dental Department policy and protocol.
  • Monitors biological and chemical wash solution to ensure quality and consistency for decontamination of instruments and medical equipment.
  • Adheres to the infection control guidelines, performs weekly spore testing and maintain the sterilization log.
  • Sorts mismatched sets of instruments, trays, and medical equipment and makes them available for sterile processing and to dental staff to use in a timely manner.
  • Restocks, labels, and maintains inventory, submits requisitions, collects and distributes instruments, trays, crash carts, and facility medical equipment.
  • Performs environmental maintenance duties and assists in maintaining inventory levels in sterile processing, monitoring supply usage and maintaining infection control standards.
  • Verifies that sterilization equipment functions properly, requisitions for equipment maintenance, repair or replacement, and removes defective equipment.
  • Maintains a clean work area.
  • Assists with maintaining established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, and quality improvement, safety, and environmental and infection control standards.
  • Communicates appropriately using good interpersonal skills.
  • Follows established protocols for maintaining dental sterilization equipment.
  • Performs weekly spore testing on sterilization equipment and maintains logs.
  • Maintain load logs of packages sterilized, ensuring accurate tracking and documentation.
  • Check sterilized instruments for package integrity and sterilization status prior to storage.
  • Go through stored instruments to check for package integrity and packages sterilized more than 12 months ago to re-sterilize.
  • Other duties as assigned and requested.
