Under the general direction of the Dental Health Coordinator, the Dental Hygienist will focus on preventative oral care and identifying concerns to be addressed by dentists that our program has partnered with. Duties include dental prophylaxis on children, assessing oral health, fluoride applications, and educating patients on proper hygiene techniques.

  • Ability to make meaningful observations and assessments, develop contracts, and interact effectively with dental providers, clients and the general public.
  • Participate in trainings and educational opportunities.
  • Implements and follows program policies and procedures.
  • Participates in the development, along with guidance from Oral Health Program Coordinator, of in-service training as needed.
  • Participates in departments quality improvement initiatives.
  • Effective verbal and written communication to educate patients, explain procedures, and collaborate with a team.
  • Serves as a liaison between staff and other administrative and consultative personnel.
  • Assess strengths of individuals and communities and respond appropriately to their needs based on sensitivity to and respect for their diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds and socioeconomic status.
  • Employ strategies to assure culturally-sensitive public health and health service delivery systems.
  • There is significant interaction with the general public, dental health professionals, community resources, human service agencies and Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services.
  • Knowledge of current dental practice, community resources, and inter-professional relationships involved in implementation of programs.
  • Supports a collaborative relationship between the Fond du Lac County Dental Program and local dental providers.
  • Working knowledge and appreciation of the contribution of the multidisciplinary team in public health.
  • Provide assigned dental services to assigned schools / Head Start centers.
  • Ability to track hours and report to Office Manager in a time appropriate manner.
  • Assist Oral Health Program Coordinator with monthly reimbursement to finance department to pay the dental providers.
  • Ability to exercise leadership.
  • Assumes designated responsibilities in the absence of the Dental Health Coordinator.
  • Supervises and provides field experience for students utilizing the department for their clinical experience as needed.
  • Performs the dental assessment on individuals (direct in person assessment and over the phone).
  • Performs dental cleanings on individuals.
  • Maintains a clean environment, which includes sterilizing equipment and ensuring a safe and clean clinical environment.
  • Attends in-service education to enhance and maintain professional skills.
  • Participates in the implementation of records and record system for the dental program.
  • Administers and monitors compliance as a Wisconsin Medicaid dental provider.
  • Other duties as may be assigned, including responding to an emergency event.
  • Associates Degree in Dental Hygiene (Baccalaureate degree in Dental Hygiene desirable).
  • Current license to practice as a dental hygienist in the State of Wisconsin.
  • 3 years of successful dental hygiene experience.
  • Must possess a valid Wisconsin driver’s license.
  • Membership in professional organization desirable.
