Under the general supervision of the Director of Health and Human Services or designee performs skilled dental hygiene work of ordinary difficulty and responsibility in conducting oral examination and prophylactic work and applying sealants primarily for school children; does related work as required.

  • Notifies parents of school children of upcoming dental screening services.
  • Examines and charts the entire oral cavity and notifies parents if referral needed.
  • Provides topical intraoral fluoride treatments.
  • Sterilizes and maintains instruments and equipment in accordance with CDC/American Dental Association standards.
  • Applies dental sealants as indicated.
  • Performs routine prophylaxes and takes dental x-rays.
  • Educates students in classroom settings about preventive dental health.
  • Acts as a dental resource and makes referrals to the school's inter-disciplinary team or other dental specialists as necessary.
  • Instructs individual students and their parents in preventative dentistry and nutrition as related to oral hygiene as necessary.
  • Confers with parents, informs them of required dental care and suggests appropriate provider.
  • Documents all pertinent dental and medical history.
  • Sets up and maintains individual charts on each student; tracks all dental needs; makes appropriate referrals and follow-ups; and ensures that permission slips are completed.
  • Drafts, updates, and prepares forms and other necessary correspondence related to the dental hygiene program.
  • Participates in community health fairs.
  • Schedules appointments for program services.
  • Assists dentist in clinics as necessary.
  • Maintains and compiles records for annual report, including data entry of information.
  • Facilitates transportation of students to appropriate dental resources.
  • Serves as liaison with dental suppliers; anticipates the need for more supplies and expedites the ordering of supplies to ensure sufficient supply availability throughout the school year.
  • Responds to public health emergencies as requested or assigned.
  • Graduation from an accredited high school.
  • Graduation from an accredited School of Dental Hygiene.
  • Two (2) years of experience as a practicing hygienist.
  • Possession of a valid Connecticut license to practice dental hygiene at the time of application.
