About The Position

The Dental Hygienist - School-Based Health Center position involves providing dental hygiene services under indirect or no supervision in a school-based health center setting. The role focuses on the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of oral diseases, performing preventative care, and collaborating with dentists to ensure comprehensive patient care. The hygienist will also be responsible for maintaining patient records, taking radiographs, and ensuring up-to-date dental exams.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree in Dental Hygiene
  • 4-6 years of direct clinical practice or 1-3 years in a medical-dental integrated or school-based dental setting
  • Licensed Dental Hygienist in Colorado
  • BLS-Basic Life Support certification
  • Local Anesthesia certification from the State Board of Dentistry
  • Interim Therapeutic Restorations Permit from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry

Responsibilities

  • Perform dental hygiene assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning for dental hygiene services.
  • Identify dental abnormalities for immediate referral to a Denver Health community health clinic dentist.
  • Provide preventive measures including prophylactic cleaning, fluoride application, and dental sealants.
  • Take digital images for diagnosis and referral to a DH-CHC dentist.
  • Administer topical and injectable local anesthetic as needed.
  • Interview patients/guardians to obtain medical and dental history and document existing dental restorations and conditions.
  • Complete comprehensive periodontal assessments as needed for treatment planning.
  • Take intraoral images for documentation and patient education.
  • Complete Caries Risk Assessments for all patients.
  • Complete patient care notes within 72 hours of registration.
  • Assist with sterile processing preparation and daily maintenance of portable dental units.
  • May fill in at the dental sealant program or community dental clinics.
