About The Position

The Dental Hygiene Instructor at Fresno City College is a full-time, tenure-track position responsible for providing comprehensive instruction in dental hygiene education. The role emphasizes equity-minded teaching practices and collaboration with diverse student populations, aiming to enhance student success and close equity gaps. The instructor will engage in both didactic and clinical teaching, participate in curriculum development, and contribute to the overall mission of the college to foster an inclusive learning environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in dental hygiene or related field of study.
  • Current license in California as a dental hygienist or dentist, or immediate eligibility to obtain California license.
  • Certification in administration of local anesthesia, nitrous oxide sedation, and performance of soft tissue management.
  • Minimum of six years of direct patient care within the previous five years with no disciplinary action.
  • Minimum of one year teaching experience in an accredited dental hygiene program.
  • Evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

  • Recent experience working with racially minoritized students and understanding historical patterns of exclusion in higher education.
  • Willingness to examine and remediate instructional practices to support racially minoritized students.

  • Master's degree or candidate in progress in a related field preferred.
  • Continuous professional membership in relevant dental hygiene associations.
  • Certified in Interim Therapeutic Restorations.
  • Current knowledge of Evidence Based Decision Making and Emerging Workforce Models.
  • Teaching experience at the college level.

Responsibilities

  • Teach a full range of didactic and clinical application classes in dental hygiene education.
  • Serve as a clinical facilitator responsible for the overall quality of clinical instruction.
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with supervising dentists, program faculty, staff, students, and clinic patients.
  • Ensure effective communication between the college and the community.
  • Participate in curriculum and program development and assessment of student learning outcomes.
  • Engage in student recruiting and outreach activities.
  • Advise and mentor students.
  • Attend professional meetings and workshops as needed.
  • Cooperate with colleagues regarding class scheduling.
  • Serve on and attend department, college, and district committees as required.
  • Maintain professional credentials to teach in a baccalaureate-level dental hygiene program.
  • Assist in advancing the institutional mission and goals.
  • Teach in various instructional settings and times, including evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Fulfill all duties and responsibilities of instructors as required.
