About The Position

Under the supervision of the dentist, the dental hygienist is responsible for treating and educating patients in a safe and professional manner in order to prevent and manage oral diseases. Minimum Job Requirement Current licensure as a dental hygienist in the state of Connecticut. Current CPR certification. Current certificate to administer local anesthesia. Complies with CHWC attendance policy. To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each of the listed duties satisfactorily and have the knowledge and skillset detailed below.

Requirements

  • Current licensure as a dental hygienist in the state of Connecticut.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Current certificate to administer local anesthesia.
  • Complies with CHWC attendance policy.
  • Knowledge of dental hygiene procedures, techniques and tools.
  • Ability to perform the full range of dental hygiene procedures, which includes being able to sit for long periods of time providing periodontal treatment, handle small sharp instruments, operate a keyboard, speak, hear, and write.
  • Ability to independently assess periodontal and caries risk assessments, and associated conditions and pathology in dental patients.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, an institutional regulations and guidelines for the provision of dental outpatient services.
  • Ability to set up and prepare dental equipment and instrumentation in accordance with established regulation and guidelines.
  • Manage the dental office infection control plan to meet OSHA, CDC, and American Dental Association (ADA) standards.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct patient care by preforming periodontal and oral cancer examinations, prophylaxis, periodontal scaling and root planning, sealants, applying fluoride and varnish treatments, and taking radiographs.
  • Documents accurate and updated medical history, dental history of chief complaint, dental charting, periodontal charting, and pertinent observations.
  • Uses appropriate procedural coding.
  • Schedules patients and assures a minimum of time lost.
  • Complies with “Universal Precautions” for infection control.
  • Maintains and fully understands the importance of patient confidentiality, and HIPAA Compliance.
  • Follows Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) requirements.
  • Assists with or institutes emergency measures for sudden adverse developments during treatment of patients.
  • Assumes responsibility for the upkeep of the dental operatory and equipment.
  • Routinely clean and stock operatory.
  • Performs routine cleaning and maintenance of dental equipment in assigned operatories and for the assigned equipment.
  • Regularly and thoroughly performs maintenance of assigned equipment.
  • Attend and participates in staff meetings.
  • Functions in a safe and professional manner.
  • Provides chair-side assistance to the dentist as needed.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
