About The Position

The Dental Assisting Instructor reports to the Director of Career Programs: Division of Health Professions who will assign location and hours of the dental assisting instructor activities. The dental assisting instructor is responsible for the implementation, management, and teaching of the dental assistant program curriculum. The dental assisting instructor will also provide all classroom/laboratory instruction including dental practices and procedures, practical ethics and confidentiality; basic dental records, charts, and forms; dental terminology; and a sound knowledge of instructional methods and techniques.

Requirements

  • 2 + years field experience as a Dental Assistant, Hygienist, or Dentist required
  • PA Radiology certification required
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills required.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to establish positive relationships with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should be proficient in Microsoft Office (especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and internet skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Field experience as EFDA
  • Current CDA and CPR certification
  • Previous teaching experience in a college and or Career Training Program
  • Experience with adult education population, curriculum development, mandated welfare reform, and dislocated workers are preferred.
  • Bilingual: English/Spanish
  • Current CDA, PA Radiology, and CPR Certifications a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce classroom management and ensure that safety precautions are adhered to.
  • Adhere to all state and other licensing requirements mandated by the state and/or the profession.
  • Prepare for each class by reviewing the curriculum, lab stations, and presentations provided and deliver lectures, supplementing with real-life work experience as needed.
  • Develop and deliver lesson plans and instructional materials for dental assistant students.
  • See that equipment and/or labs are properly maintained where appropriate. Assist with ordering lab supplies.
  • Demonstrate dental skills/procedures, including x-ray and assist students as they practice hands-on in the lab.
  • Remain aware of current practices and industry standards and update curriculum as needed.
  • Prepare students for all portions of the DANB exam by evaluating student performance and make any necessary adjustments to meet student learning needs.
  • Maintain good communications and working relationships with appropriate staff, appropriate agencies, and class site location staff.
  • Role model professional behavior.
  • Work with the internship coordinator to prepare students for internship.
  • Ensure a safe learning environment, monitor class attendance, grade student assignments.
  • Assess student competency and provide constructive feedback.
  • Update Canvas course and have class open prior to class start.
  • Collaborate with other faculty members to improve instructional practices.
  • Participate in faculty meetings and professional development opportunities to enhance teaching skills.
  • Assess and evaluate student progress and provide feedback to students on their performance.
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively interact with students, staff, and faculty.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
