The position focuses on improving patient experience and quality of care by emphasizing optimal patient access, continuity, and team-based care. The role involves preparing the operatory before appointments, including setting up sterile instrument trays, radiographs, handpieces, materials, and supplies. The dental assistant will greet and seat patients in a friendly, professional manner, take vital signs, and prepare patients for dental treatment. Responsibilities also include recording patient medical history, performing digital scans and x-rays, assisting with patient data entry, and providing chair-side assistance during dental procedures. The assistant will maintain cleanliness and organization of operatories, manage inventory, and adhere to infection control measures. Participation in community prevention activities is also expected.

  • Prepares operatory before appointment, including setting up sterile instrument trays, radiographs, handpieces, materials, and supplies.
  • Greets and seats patients in a friendly, professional, and courteous manner; takes vital signs and prepares patients for dental treatment.
  • Records information related to the patient's medical history and informs the dentist of any medical problems or drug allergies.
  • Performs digital scans and digital/panoramic x-rays.
  • Assists with patient data entry into dental software programs.
  • Provides chair-side assistance in all phases of general dentistry.
  • Performs fluoride treatment, including trays, fluoride varnish, and rinses.
  • Maintains operatories neat and orderly and within standards for clean, sterile dental procedures.
  • Assists with schedule maintenance and patient appointments.
  • Prepares and maintains dental instruments, supplies, and equipment according to protocol.
  • Cleans, prepares, and maintains operatories, lab, and sterilization areas.
  • Maintains appropriate infection control measures pre- and post-treatment.
  • Participates in continuous quality improvement activities.
  • Participates in community prevention activities such as health fairs.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Completion of Dental Assistant Training Program or a Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) Program.
  • One or two years of related experience or equivalent combination of experience and training preferred.
  • Current CPR Card or successful certification/recertification within 6 months after hire.
  • Experience working with Alaska Natives and/or other Native Americans preferred.
  • Certification from the Dental Assisting National Board preferred.
