About The Position
The Dental Assistant at Meharry Medical College plays a crucial role in supporting the oral and maxillofacial surgery team. This position operates under general supervision and is responsible for a variety of tasks that ensure the smooth operation of the clinic. The Dental Assistant sets up and takes radiographs, both digital and manual, and meticulously logs the x-rays taken. They assist in monitoring and recording patients' vital signs, ensuring that all necessary paperwork and documentation are prepared and available when patients arrive for their appointments. This role also involves managing supplies and equipment in the clinical areas, reporting any equipment malfunctions to the dental maintenance team, and ensuring that all instruments are properly sterilized and maintained. In addition to these responsibilities, the Dental Assistant works closely with faculty, residents, and students, particularly during oral and maxillofacial surgery procedures. They prepare the treatment area by draping the patient and arranging dental instruments, materials, and medications in the order they will be used. The assistant is also responsible for passing instruments to the dental team during procedures, which may include mixing dental materials and assisting with local anesthesia, nitrous oxide, and intravenous sedation. Maintaining a clear operating area during procedures is essential, and the assistant uses suction devices and irrigation techniques to facilitate this. The role requires effective communication skills, as the Dental Assistant answers phone calls, takes messages, and manages patient inquiries. They also maintain an inventory of supplies, requisitioning items as needed, and ensuring that students have the necessary equipment for their clinical work. Overall, the Dental Assistant is integral to providing a positive patient experience and supporting the educational environment for dental students and residents.
