This position is located within the Department of Health & Human Services (HHS), Indian Health Service (IHS), Southwest Region, Phoenix Area, Colorado River Service Unit-Peach Springs Health Center, Dental Department, Peach Springs, AZ. The role involves performing routine and advanced chairside dental assistant services. The position reports to the Supervisory Dental Assistant.

  • Restore teeth after preparation has been accomplished.
  • Apply and remove rubber dam, remove temporary fillings.
  • Select, adapt, seal and cement stainless steel crowns.
  • Perform dental laboratory procedures.
  • Operate ultra-sonic scaler and use hand instruments.
  • Provide dental chairside assisting.
  • Apply desensitizing agents, place surgical gauze, apply and remove periodontal dressings, and remove sutures.
  • Present information to community groups on oral health and dental disease prevention.
  • Enter medical health history into Electronic Dental Record (EDR).
  • Accurately chart and code dental procedures into EDR.
  • Clean, sharpen, package, and sterilize all dental instruments and ensure proper storage when not in use.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Must pass a pre-employment fingerprint check and background investigation.
  • Must have completed a full four-year course of study in dental assistant or dental hygiene.
  • Must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 grade level in the Federal service.
  • Must meet the Basic Requirements for dental assistants as per Public Law 97-35.
  • Experience in providing simple and complex dental assistance duties.
  • Completion of training in expanded functions for dental assistants.
  • Courses in a dental hygiene or dental assistant program accredited by the American Dental Association.
