About The Position

Delivery Drivers serve as a frontline position to the broader DC Central Kitchen (DCCK) community, be it through our work at schools, farm to kitchen programs, partner agencies, or through our catering or contract venues. Drivers are responsible for basis preventative maintenance of their vehicles, regular checking of fluid levels, and keeping body, cab, and cargo areas clean.  Additionally, they are responsible for all paper work used to fulfill their assignments ensuring it is filled out and filed properly to maintain compliance with grants, contracts, partnership relations and contract assignments that require signatures for both pick and delivery.  Also, responsible for ensuring that food is delivered at the appropriate temperatures, as well as having these temperatures documented through delivery slips and other means.

Requirements

  • Must complete criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and TB Test.
  • Ability to lift (50) lbs., walking, standing, bending for long periods. Moderate physical activity required.
  • Ability to work safely in an environment where exposure to unusual elements such as extreme temperatures, fumes, dirt, smoke, loud noise, and variety of odor is common.
  • Ability to work safely in extreme weather and temperatures.
  • Must be extremely flexible to be scheduled for various shifts. Being on-call may be required.
  • Desire to be part of a large nonprofit whose mission is to “combat hunger and create opportunity”
  • High School Diploma, GED and (4-6) years of combined education/work experience.
  • 1-year of commercial driving/transit experience.
  • Valid driver’s license/ Good Driving record required.
  • Must be comfortable in, and have experience in, driving trucks (non-CDL) up to 22 feet in length. Experience with air brakes required.
  • Have a good sense of direction and understanding of the roadways in the greater DC Metropolitan Area.
  • Positive attitude in a in a fast-paced, ever-changing work environment.
  • Willingness to learn and ability to be flexible.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team.
  • Have or be able to obtain Serve Safe certification.
  • Maintain commitment to an alcohol and drug free workplace. This position is “Safety Sensitive”; Safety Sensitive employees will also be subject to random drug/alcohol testing.
  • Must have or be willing to obtain DOT license.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver prepared food and pickup food and other donations in accordance with the assigned routes and agreement with clients
  • Provide appropriate receipts to client or DCCK
  • Arrive at specified stops in accordance with the time and date specifications provided on route sheets and/or action memos.
  • Complete any extra pickups and deliveries as assigned by DCCK supervisors.
  • Complete, as needed donor receipts (for food and non-food) at every donation location.
  • Complete route sheets with times, mileage, and driver identification information.
  • Complete a vehicle maintenance report every day before leaving the premises.
  • Maintain temperature log of both foods received and delivered.
  • Obtain the food for assigned deliveries from the designated DCCK location.
  • Ensure that deliveries or pick-ups are complete by checking appropriate action memos or delivery slips.
  • Load food for deliveries into assigned vehicle.
  • Unload food at the designated agency location.
  • Ensure that food and non-food items are safely loaded onto vehicle.
  • Unloading vehicles at DC Central Kitchen facilities is the responsibility of the drivers. Utility staff, volunteers, and other DCCK staff may help but, ultimately, a driver is responsible for unloading the product from his/her own truck.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation or Transportation Manager.
  • Pick up food and other donations as assigned.
