Woodlands Market — Marin and San Francisco’s premier gourmet grocery destination — is seeking an experienced Deli Manager for our newly remodeled flagship store in Kentfield. Nestled in the heart of Marin, our location offers a warm community atmosphere and stunning views of Mount Tamalpais, making it a truly exceptional place to work and lead. The Deli Manager is responsible for leading all aspects of the Deli Department to deliver exceptional customer service, high-quality food, and strong financial performance. This role oversees daily operations, team leadership, food safety, merchandising, and production while ensuring compliance with company policies and regulatory standards. The Deli Manager sets the tone for a positive, efficient, and customer-focused department.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years of deli or food service experience
  • Minimum of 1 year in a supervisory or management role
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds
  • Frequent bending, reaching, slicing, and handling food products

Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach, train, and develop deli supervisors and team members.
  • Foster a positive, respectful, and service-driven team culture.
  • Create and manage department schedules aligned with sales, margin and labor targets.
  • Conduct onboarding, ongoing training, and performance feedback for deli staff.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, workplace safety, and food safety standards.
  • Actively drive and execute the Housemade Program, ensuring recipes, processes, and retail standards are consistently followed.
  • Partner closely with the Housemade Leadership Team to implement program guidance, updates, and best practices.
  • Translate Housemade program direction into clear daily priorities, production plans, and coaching for the deli team.
  • Serve as the primary point of accountability for Housemade execution, quality, and continuous improvement within the deli.
  • Provide feedback to the Housemade Leadership Team on operational challenges, product performance, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Deliver a consistently friendly, engaging, and solution-oriented customer experience.
  • Respond to customer questions, special requests, and concerns promptly and professionally.
  • Ensure deli cases are attractive, well-stocked, and merchandised to company standards.
  • Oversee preparation and fulfillment of custom orders, including phone orders when necessary.
  • Oversee daily deli operations including food preparation, production planning, and retail execution.
  • Communicate daily with the team regarding available items, product features, and sales performance.
  • Maintain product quality, freshness, presentation, and proper rotation at all times.
  • Monitor inventory levels and coordinate restocking from the walk-in and back stock.
  • Ensure proper setup, execution, and breakdown of all deli displays and service cases.
  • Ensure strict adherence to food safety, sanitation, and health department regulations.
  • Maintain temperature logs, waste logs, and cleaning schedules.
  • Enforce safe food handling practices, including proper use of gloves, knives, slicers, and equipment.
  • Conduct routine equipment checks and coordinate maintenance or repairs as needed.
  • Drive department sales, margin, and profitability through effective merchandising and labor control.
  • Minimize shrink and waste through proper forecasting, production planning, and rotation.
  • Monitor department performance and take corrective action as needed to meet goals.
  • Oversee all opening and closing procedures for the department.
  • Communicate with store leadership regarding customer issues, staffing needs, or operational concerns.
