As a Deli Clerk at Safeway, you will serve as a primary contact for customers, providing friendly, courteous, and helpful service. Your role will involve operating a computerized cash register and electronic scale in the delicatessen to weigh, wrap, itemize, and total customers' purchases. You may take deli orders either face-to-face or by telephone, and you will be responsible for preparing deli food for both hot and cold deli cases. This includes slicing and wrapping meats and cheeses for special orders or to fill the deli case, as well as preparing fruit or seasonal trays for display or special orders. Additionally, you will be tasked with replenishing items in the coffee area and deli case, checking and maintaining appropriate levels of supplies in the deli area, and retrieving products from storage to stock the freezer, cooler, or storage room as needed. Your duties will also include washing dishes, pots, and pans, sweeping and mopping floors, cleaning the interior of display cases, and changing oil and filters in the deep fryer while sanitizing food preparation equipment as necessary. The Deli Clerk position requires a commitment to customer service as defined by the employer, and you will be expected to prepare hot and cold deli food for display in the deli cases for sale to customers. Operating slicers and other food preparation equipment, using scales and volume measures to apportion products correctly, and handling cash transactions will also be part of your responsibilities. You will need to inventory stock, restock, and face shelves of deli cases on the sales floor, ensure sanitation of the deli area, and perform daily temperature and tare checks. Other duties may be assigned as needed.
