About The Position

The person in this position is responsible for assisting the Head Football Coach by coordinating and overseeing the defensive unit for the football team. This includes preparing and conducting defensive team practices, training, competition game planning and recruiting.

Requirements

  • Complete NCAA Coaches Certification Curriculum within first two (2) weeks of employment
  • Must be willing to work evenings, weekends, and odd hours
  • Knowledge of applicable team or individual sports and playing rules
  • Ability to exhibit strong leadership and management skills
  • Knowledge of NCAA student-athlete academic eligibility requirements
  • Demonstrated competitive coaching skills in area of sport specialty
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
  • Knowledge of NCAA recruiting rules
  • knowledge of travel/lodging planning and scheduling
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment
  • Ability to organize and coordinate
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbal and written
  • Bachelor’s degree in any field
  • Two (2) years of football coaching experience

  • Collegiate playing or coaching experience

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the defensive unit of the football team by assisting, directing and game planning on the defensive side of the ball
  • Supervise and direct defensive assistant coaches
  • Develop performance standards for student-athletes to maximize their potential and achieve high levels of competition
  • Assess athletic performance and improvement and provide feedback and guidance regarding athletic progress
  • Effectively deliver instruction and motivation to defensive assistant coaches and players
  • Develop high expectations for student-athletes to achieve in the classroom as well as on the field
  • Develop and implement practice plans and strategies for athletic events
  • Supervise NMHU athletic events and enforce sportsmanship standards
  • Assist with game management for home events when not competing
  • Assist with developing and supervising community service events
  • Supervise student-athletes during road trips
  • Provide positive participation with events that will benefit the athletic experience for the student-athletes
  • Participate in the planning of, as well as participate in, fundraising activities for individual programs and for the athletic department in general
  • Adhere to NCAA, Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, and institutional rules and regulations
  • Organize, prepare, and conduct defensive team practices, training and competition
  • Recruit potential student-athletes
  • Provide academic monitoring and support for student-athletes in the program
  • Provide support to the Head Football Coach as necessary
  • Maintain regular attendance
  • Perform other duties as assigned
