About The Position

Tahoe Donner Association is looking for Defensible Space Specialists to join our Defensible Space operations! The Defensible Space Specialist is responsible for the performance of residential defensible space inspections and interacting with the public to provide fire prevention information. This position assists with the forestry department’s GIS Data Collection, tree health assessments, and tree removal permit program, as well as forestry project planning and field preparation. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Provides excellent customer service to members, guests, employees and the general public. Effectively resolves enforcement issues and conflict through a solution-oriented and collaborative approach. Performs defensible space and home hardening inspections to Tahoe Donner rules, State and Local laws, regulations, and best practices. Interprets and communicates Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) fire behavior and principles to members to create a better understanding of defensible space requirements. Stays informed about local defensible space assistance programs and communicates them with members. Maintains records of inspections through data input using software and other tools. Conducts follow-up emails and phone calls to provide members with information including reports and hazardous vegetation removal requirements to meet Tahoe Donner rules. Under guidance from Forester, conducts tree health assessments and permits trees for removal, following Tahoe Donner rules and guidelines. This is a Full-Time Seasonal opportunity!! Requirements

  • Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Knowledge of defensible space, forestry, fuels management, and the principles, practices and methods used in site evaluation and hazard reduction.
  • Knowledge of fire protection principles, especially as it relates to wildland fire and the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI).
  • Effective communication skills, oral & written.
  • Strong sense of customer service & safety awareness
  • Ability to analyze situations and develop solutions.
  • Must be able to physically inspect properties with varied and sometimes rugged topography.
  • Requires possession of valid Class C Driver License with a driving record meeting the minimum standards required by the Association insurance carrier.
  • These skills and abilities are typically acquired through a high school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 15 semester units in natural resource management, forestry or fire science or one year’s relevant experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of formal training, education and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform all the duties of the position.
  • On the job training may be provided to applicants that do not meet the previous criteria but do show a high level of interpersonal skills, reliability and attention to detail.
