About The Position

The Cumberland River Quarry in Salem, Kentucky is currently recruiting for a Deckhand. Only on-line applicants will be considered / evaluated. Deckhand-Classification Description: Work in adverse conditions in a safe and productive manner. Spot and recognize unsafe conditions on vessel and barges. Correct hazards, if not able to correct on his own report to mate or pilot for proper course of action. Ensure to report any slip, trip, fall scratch or any other injury to pilot or supervisor so incident can be recorded, and appropriate action can be taken. Tie lines to hold barges and not fowl down lines. Lay rigging wires, For & Aft, Breast wires and elect: Lay wires on uneven barges such as empties to loads. Change face wires on boat. Lace an eye in a wire. Tie an eye in lines such as laced in or a bowling eye. Change winch wires on barges. To keep tools and equipment stowed in an orderly faction. Keep walkway and travel ways clear of lines, tools and debris. Keep galley and head clean floors mopped trash taken out and elect: Keep all oils, detergents and cleaners stowed in a manner that is contained to vessel to avoid spills to waterways. Communicate well with pilot, deckhands, barge loader on dock, and other vessels in fleet. Read and understand the deckhand manual, pass test. Operate Rescue Skiff.

Requirements

  • Ability and desire to work 12-hour shifts
  • Willingness and flexibility to work weekend or overtime as needed
  • Ability to do manual labor including lifting items as heavy as 50 pounds
  • Ability and desire to work during inclement conditions including extreme heat and cold
  • Ability to climb ladders, stairs, and preform repetitive bending and stooping when required
  • Excellent communication skills and work well with all personnel at the Quarry
  • Motivated and a self-starter
  • Willing to work night shift
