About The Position

The Dean is the head of the College of Arts & Sciences and assists the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs in accomplishing the University's academic experience, student success and faculty development goals by coordinating and monitoring all aspects of academic programs, student progress and student learning outcomes throughout their university matriculation. The Dean works as a member of a team by collaborating with faculty, staff and administration in responding to outside accrediting agencies and effectively engaging in strategic planning, performance evaluations, program reviews and other assessments of the University's effectiveness.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in one of the major areas offered in the College of Arts & Sciences.

  • Administrative leadership, vision, and experience in a diverse academic environment characterized by collegial management, mentorship, inclusive decision-making, and effective communication.
  • Ability to create and nurture a supportive environment that utilizes transparent processes to foster intellectual vitality, creativity, student learning, and outstanding teaching, research, and community/public service.
  • Commitment to affirmative action, social justice, and diversity in all its forms; experience in promoting the learning opportunities offered by a diverse community.
  • Experience and commitment to fostering international perspectives in the curriculum and promoting global experiences for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to effectively represent the College of Arts & Sciences while working in collaboration with the University community.
  • Significant administrative experience in positions of increasing responsibility.
  • Demonstrated decision-making, problem-solving, and collaboration skills with a wide spectrum of university constituents.
  • Excellent writing, speaking, interpersonal and management skills.
  • Knowledge of current issues in recruitment, retention, student success and innovation in higher education and active participation in professional associations.
  • Familiarity with issues facing church-related, historically black colleges and universities.
  • Commitment to the mission of the University, to the leadership of the President and the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, and to the potential of each student for academic and personal achievement.

Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership and vision to the College of Arts & Sciences; works with faculty to create an academic, cultural, and physical environment conducive to scholarship, intellectual vitality, and learning; and establishes and nurtures a supportive diverse work environment.
  • Provides leadership in the development and implementation of programs and plans designed to aid student recruitment, retention and student success.
  • Promotes the Vision, Mission and Core Values of the University through the activities and programs of the College of Arts & Sciences and works with other University administrators to ensure the well-being and success of HT.
  • Provides leadership in the assessment and improvement of the General Education program, including faculty, curriculum, program development, and support services.
  • Serves as HT's liaison for UNCF scholarships and internships, and provides leadership for the identification and awarding of other student scholarships, internships, and grants.
  • In conjunction with the Convocations and Assemblies Committee, plans and coordinates Honors Day and other events/activities to recognize students' academic achievements.
  • Seeks grants and other outside resources to build and support academic programs and provide scholarships to students in the College of Arts & Sciences.
  • The Dean reports to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, serves as a member of the President's Administrative Council and serves on the Dean's Council.
