About The Position

YouthBuild Philadelphia Charter School is a tuition-free, public charter high school, with a singular focus on supporting youth aged 17-20 who have been pushed out of traditional schools. During our 1-year alternative program, Youthbuild facilitates a warm, loving culture that uses a variety of structures to build community, such as a restorative-justice approach to discipline, weekly community meetings, and school-wide service projects. Students are empowered to attain their high school diploma and vocational certifications, while receiving unconditional support by the staff around them. The YouthBuild Assistant Dean of Culture partners with the school staff to ensure that YouthBuild Philadelphia has a culture of high standards (respect, excellence, and perseverance). The Assistant Dean of Culture is responsible for assisting students with their arrival, lunch, community meetings, dismissal, and classroom transitions. The Assistant Dean of Culture will work with us to ensure that all YouthBuild students achieve academic and social-emotional success. This role requires frequent standing and regular movement throughout the building to engage with students and staff and to ensure a safe and welcoming school culture. The ideal candidate should be comfortable with a dynamic work environment that involves continuous mobility.

Responsibilities

  • Under the guidance of the Director of School Culture, ensure a safe and responsive culture for all students.
  • Be highly present and visible during school hours and school-led events.
  • Assist in maintaining databases and with up to date student information on attendance, discipline and merit records.
  • Assist in maintaining and monitoring safety by being accessible and visible in hallways, classrooms, during arrival/dismissal of students, lunch periods, after school programs including detention, homework club, etc.
  • Track student progress, give frequent actionable feedback to students and communicate student progress to the greater community through PowerSchool.
  • Support student discipline with a restorative justice model.
  • Assist with school wide communication including school culture expectations, student events, and disciplinary hearing information.
  • Assist in planning and facilitation activities, community meetings, and events to build positive school culture.
  • Consistently communicate to staff about their mentees and any action taken with students.
  • Model effective, appropriate engagement with all students at all times, operating with warmth and high expectations.
  • Work enthusiastically with young people who are learning to be change agents in the community.
  • Work in inter-departmental teams to support the success of a group of students as they move through our rigorous program.
  • Participate in a highly collaborative, fluid school culture that requires strong interpersonal skills and flexibility.
