About The Position
The Dean of Students at Norfolk Public Schools is a full-time, permanent position responsible for overseeing student discipline and supporting the educational environment within the school. This role is situated within the school building and requires a strong commitment to maintaining a safe and conducive learning atmosphere. The Dean will engage with students, parents, and staff to address behavioral issues, implement school discipline plans, and promote effective classroom management practices. The position demands regular attendance and accountability to the principal or their designee, with an annual appointment that requires reapplication each year. Those not selected for the position will transition back to a classroom teaching role within their endorsement areas. In this role, the Dean of Students will assess and resolve behavior problems that disrupt the learning process or compromise the safety of students and staff. This includes reviewing referrals from teachers, communicating with parents regarding disciplinary matters, and providing feedback to educators on best practices for engaging students. The Dean will also assist in creating a secure school environment, coordinating with security personnel, bus drivers, and cafeteria staff to ensure orderly operations. Additionally, the Dean will support fundraising activities, after-school events, and emergency preparedness drills, contributing to the overall functioning of the school community. The position requires a comprehensive understanding of school law, district policies, and effective classroom management strategies. The Dean must possess strong leadership and communication skills to effectively collaborate with various stakeholders, including students, parents, teachers, and community agencies. The ability to utilize technology, such as Synergy©, for managing student records and dispositions is also essential. The Dean of Students plays a critical role in fostering a positive school culture and ensuring that all students have the opportunity to succeed academically and socially.
