About The Position

The Dean is responsible for the strategic and operational management of the James M. Johnson School of Aviation Sciences. The Dean leads an aviation team charged with planning, coordinating, and delivering quality instructional programs in the School of Aviation Sciences. The Dean reports directly to the Provost/Chief Academic Officer and serves on the President’s executive cabinet.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred.
  • If a candidate with a bachelor’s degree is hired, as a condition of employment, the College may require the individual to obtain a master’s degree within a specified period.
  • Higher education leadership experience.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret FAA regulations and policies, common technical journals, and legal documents.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or the public.
  • Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors and trustees.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to operate a computer and related software, copier, fax, test scanner, multi-line telephone and voice mail.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other people/organizations.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations representing a wide range of ages, gender, nationalities, and cultures.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment of shared decision-making.

Nice To Haves

  • Higher education teaching experience is desirable.
  • FAA certification as a commercial multi-engine pilot or military equivalent (flight instructor experience desirable) or experienced certified professional air traffic control specialist desirable but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in recruiting, screening, interviewing, and hiring of faculty and staff.
  • Plans orientation of full-time and part-time faculty.
  • Provides day-to-day administrative supervision and management.
  • Conducts periodic evaluations of faculty and staff as stipulated college policy and union contracts.
  • Provides leadership and serves as a resource for professional development activities within the school.
  • Serves as a problem solver and maintains effective communications with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Cultivates a culture of Respect, Accountability, Integrity, Students First, and Excellence.
  • Leads and facilitates, in collaboration with faculty/staff, the evaluation and modification of existing instructional programs and the research, development, and implementation of new programs.
  • Develops instructional schedules to serve the needs of traditional and nontraditional students.
  • Communicates curricular updates for the college catalog, website, and brochures.
  • Interacts with the Executive Director of Marketing and Communications and Admissions Offices to develop and implement a recruitment plan for the school and participate in recruitment activities.
  • Reviews all master and course syllabi to ensure compliance with college guidelines.
  • Manages and develops advisory boards in conjunction with program faculty.
  • Responds to identified needs of business, industry, and others to develop and revise programs.
  • Pursues partnerships, grants, and other opportunities to strengthen programs and enrollment.
  • Provides oversight and support for assessment of academic programs and strategic initiatives.
  • Liaise with external agencies, organizations, and schools to develop partnerships and articulation agreements enhancing student success.
  • Determines appropriate course offerings/sections.
  • Assigns courses to the appropriate classroom or lab to ensure appropriate resources are available.
  • Monitors course enrollment during registration, adjusting as necessary.
  • Addresses student and faculty issues in the event of cancelled classes.
  • Participates in the development of institutional procedures ensuring that programs and faculty/staff operate within the boundaries established by policy of the Board of Trustees, federal and state statute and regulation, and requirements imposed by accrediting agencies.
  • Participates in the strategic planning process and implementation.
  • Coordinates with faculty and staff to identify budgetary needs within the school and develops and monitors the budget.
  • Monitors reporting required of faculty and staff, including grant and assessment reporting.
  • Oversees purchase of equipment, software, supplies and materials necessary for the office, labs, and instructional areas of the school.
  • Implements and monitors instructional contracts.
  • Participates in assessment activities as required by the college and accreditors.
  • Responsible for ensuring the quality of training in all areas of the CCBC curriculum.
  • Acts as a training resource and subject matter expert to faculty.
  • Coordinates with the chief ground instructor, assistant chief ground instructor, and pilot programs facilitator to update program/course curricula and training materials.
  • Coordinates with the Air Traffic Control facilitator and control tower manager to update program/course curricula and training materials.
  • Manages the Drug and Alcohol program to ensure compliance with DOT/FAA regulations.
  • Meets regularly with school faculty and staff.
  • Collaborates with faculty to hold annual advisory committee meetings.
  • Participates in administrative meetings and community-based committee meetings.
  • Serves on campus committees and task forces.
  • Participates in professional development meetings, workshops, and conferences.
  • Serves as a resource in advising students within the school.
  • Encourages faculty involvement in student organizations and career preparation events.
  • Serves as first-line administrator concerning hearing and handling complaints/concerns of students pertaining to faculty and curricular issues within the school.
  • Other departmental related duties as required.
  • Other college duties/responsibilities as assigned.
