About The Position

DSDHH is hiring! We are seeking a Deaf Services specialist to lead community development, advocacy, public outreach and awareness, and training at the DSDHH Asheville Regional Center. This position requires staff to be able to work and communicate with Deaf and DeafBlind in our 14 counties that we serve. The applicant must be fluent in ASL and in Deaf Culture. The position will be responsible to provide advocacy training, finding resources for consumers, educating consumers on their rights and the laws, Applicant must be a team player and work well in a team. The applicant should know about the laws for communication access, have skills to do presentations and trainings as well as know how to interact with the general populations in our communities. The applicant will be responsible to set up and plan events and to also do outreaching to parents of Deaf/DeafBlind children, as well as new consumers that are Deaf/DeafBlind. Finally, the applicant needs to have basic Microsoft Suite proficiency, computer skills and be able to enter information into our data system and keeps records accurate. The Division of Services for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing (DSDHH) assures equal access to North Carolina citizens who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing and DeafBlind. Requirements

Nice To Haves

  • Having American Sign Language experience/knowledge is a plus!
  • Previous experience in social and cultural activities with the Deaf and Deaf Blind and/or elderly population.
  • Profound appreciation of communication and psychological challenges faced by Deaf and Deaf Blind individuals.
  • Extensive knowledge of federal and state laws, programs and services relating to Deaf and Deaf Blind North Carolinians.
  • Effective public presentation
  • Ability and commitment to communicate effectively with Deaf and Deaf Blind people
  • Basic Knowledge/ skills in American Sign Language
