The Director of Nursing will work as a full-time nurse and provide overall supervision to all nurses and programs regarding their medical care in conjunction with OPWDD and The Salvation Army DDS programs. The Director will oversee a maximum of 96 Persons Supported and supervise an average of five nurses, including three full-time and two part-time nurses (or equivalent). Responsibilities include managing the quality assurance process, conducting routine audits of medical records, and ensuring compliance with medical standards. The Director will collaborate with department heads, staff, residents, and family members to set goals and develop plans for improving medical services. The role requires proficiency in assessing patient needs, managing complex medical conditions, and coordinating care across multidisciplinary teams. Strong analytical and critical thinking abilities are essential for evaluating medical documentation and making evidence-based decisions. The Director must also demonstrate excellent time management and organizational skills to handle multiple cases and maintain high standards of quality and accuracy.

  • Travel to each facility location for management support and audit reviews.
  • Educate facility leadership and nursing staff monthly and ongoing.
  • Oversee process development and implementation related to nursing at all DDS sites.
  • Assist in conducting quarterly complaint surveys for compliance.
  • Identify and resolve regulatory compliance risks related to nursing.
  • Implement processes to correct identified medical issues.
  • Monitor staff, processes, and policies for quality patient care.
  • Review facility systems and suggest improvements.
  • Train staff on quality assurance and regulatory issues.
  • Identify areas of potential risk and develop systems to minimize adverse events.
  • Work collaboratively with medical, nursing, and administrative leadership.
  • Complete reviews of all DDS Individuals' medical components for compliance.
  • Provide written administrative actions and training to nurses for compliance.
  • Conduct interviews and complete the hiring process for staff.
  • Ensure coverage for all programs without an assigned nurse.
  • Complete monthly supervision of staff.
  • Submit written reports for reviews, training, and supervision.
  • Contact primary doctors for clarity on findings.
  • Attend required training to enhance job knowledge.
  • Visit all programs and provide assessments as needed.
  • Provide guidance to staff and clinical managers on patient care.
  • Complete meals and medication observations and provide feedback.
  • Assume leadership and accountability for directing the nursing department.
  • Assist in developing and implementing policies and procedures.
  • Participate in discharge planning and care plan development.
  • Participate in facility committees for evaluation and implementation of recommendations.
  • Experience in OPWDD Certified homes, community residences, and nursing homes.
  • First Aid and CPR certifications are preferred.
  • Respect and consideration for the residents being served.
  • Current licensed as a Professional Registered Nurse in New York State.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing required; Master's degree preferred.
  • Supervisory experience required.
  • Must be on call via phone and email access 24/7.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
