The City's Department of City Planning is recruiting for summer interns. Interns perform various and diverse administrative and/or project duties depending on specific department and job assignment. These positions are typically assigned to someone attending college who is interning to gain more experience and knowledge of a specific function in municipal government. Opportunities are available in the following offices within the Department of City Planning: Office of the Commissioner, Office of Buildings, Office of Design, Office of Housing and Community Development, and Office of Zoning and Development. Overall Essential Duties & Responsibilities These are typical responsibilities for this position and should not be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. May perform other duties as assigned. Performs various and diverse administrative and/or project duties depending on specific department and job assignment. This title is typically assigned to someone attending college who is interning to gain more experience and knowledge of a specific function in municipal government. Engages in on-the-job training on operational policies and work procedures to attain the necessary talents which allow the incumbent to contribute to the work being produced by the organizational unit to which assigned. This on-the-job training includes program and project tasks, performing research, preparing presentations for staff members, attending project team meetings and public events associated with the work program, managing documents, interacting with the public and other City agencies, and other clerical duties in addition to administrative/project assignments. Office of Design: · Assist a team of planners, designers, and other professionals within the Office of Design (and potential outside consultants) in initial preparations for several Small Area Plans as part of the Small Area Planning program. This is a significant part of an overall design process aimed at intentionally guiding the physical form of our city using Atlanta City Design. · Assistance with the Small Area Planning program and process shall include but not be limited to: Reviewing previous planning documents, neighborhood studies, existing condition reports, demographic data, and similar information to create a baseline of information for a Small Area Plan. · Assisting in engaging communities and neighborhoods in the design and planning process in a meaningful way through presentations, workshops, neighborhood meetings, field visits and data collection, surveys, design charrettes, etc. Assisting with GIS mapping and data analysis, including the potential creation of customized shapefiles and datasets that would allow for the future organization and consolidation of various inventories, reports, documentation, and other miscellaneous files into public facing deliverables. Decision Making Follow standardized procedures and written instructions to accomplish assigned tasks.
