About The Position
The DC Officer Trainee position at Doña Ana County involves working under general supervision to ensure the safety and security of detainees and inmates within the facility. The role requires maintaining order through the fair application of detention center policies and procedures, while also ensuring humane treatment and protection of the rights of all individuals in custody. The officer will be responsible for direct supervision of offenders, which includes overseeing their behavior during meal services, medication distribution, and conducting security checks and searches. Effective communication with a diverse population of offenders is essential, as the officer may interact with individuals from various ethnic, racial, and cultural backgrounds, including those with developmental or psychiatric disorders. In addition to supervising detainees, the officer will patrol designated areas of the facility, control traffic, and conduct physical searches to ensure the safety of all personnel and visitors. The role also involves monitoring the well-being of detainees, summoning medical aid when necessary, and assisting medical staff with medication distribution. The officer will be responsible for completing various detention center paperwork accurately and efficiently, including booking and release records, and will assist with clerical tasks when needed. The position requires the officer to respond to emergencies, which may include disturbances, fires, or other critical incidents, and to manage potentially volatile situations using appropriate levels of force when necessary. The training for this position includes a rigorous academy program that covers both classroom instruction and physical training, preparing the officer for the responsibilities of supervising inmates and ensuring their safety and security. The role may also involve working rotating shifts and performing additional duties as assigned.
