About The Position

Brandywine Creek State Park is divided by grey stone walls that were built of local stone in the late 1800s, when the property was a dairy farm owned by the du Pont family. Three Nature preserves are located within the park, including: Tulip Tree Woods, a majestic stand of 190-year-old tulip poplar, and Freshwater Marsh, the first nature preserve in Delaware. The area became a state park in 1965. A variety of seasonal Naturalist Park positions may be available at Brandywine Creek State Park: Day Camp Counselor: ($16.25) - responsible for organizing and supervising camp activities and ensuring. campers' well-being Assistant Camp Director:($17.25) - Assists with planning and coordinating activities for summer camp, helps maintain a fun, positive, safe camp environment for campers and staff. Day Camp Director: ($18.25) - responsible for planning and coordinating activities for summer camp. Creating and maintaining a fun, positive, and safe camp environment for campers and staff. Work is performed indoors and outdoors. Weekends, evenings, and holidays are scheduled to meet facility needs. For Camp positions - Monday through Friday will be needed throughout the camp season. Additional work on weekends, evenings and holidays may be scheduled. Not required to work on June 19th and July 4th.

Requirements

  • Day Camp Counselor: 1. Six months experience working with children and young adults such as academic/athletic tutoring, camp counselor, youth volunteer, classroom assistant or education teacher. 2. Knowledge of various recreational outdoor activities such as hiking, mountain biking, boating, rock climbing, fishing or swimming. 3. Possession of a valid driver’s license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
  • Assistant Day Camp Director: 1. Must be at least 20 years of age. 2. One year experience working in a camp program for children or young adults. 3. One year experience in supervising groups, staff or volunteers. 4. Knowledge of various recreational activities such as hiking, mountain biking, boating, rock climbing or swimming. 5. Knowledge of local plants, animals or history. 6. Possession of a valid driver’s license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
  • Camp Director: 1. At least 21 years of age. 2. One year experience working in a camp program for children or young adults. 3. One year experience in supervising groups, staff or volunteers. 4. Knowledge of various recreational activities such as hiking, mountain biking, boating, rock climbing, fishing, or swimming. 5. Knowledge of local plants, animals, or history. 6. Possession of a valid driver’s license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

Responsibilities

  • May deliver interpretive programs to participants of all ages in a variety of contexts.
  • Distributes interpretive publications.
  • May lead educational and recreational hikes, canoe and kayak trips plus programs for park visitors and/ or summer camps.
  • May develop new games and activities.
  • Ensure a fun, educational and safe environment for children.
  • May assist with First-Aid duties.
  • May supervise and mentor summer camp team.
  • May lead daily summer camper activities, such as teaching, crafts, games, etc.
  • Provides general customer service and park information to visitors.
  • Includes live animal care and handling.
  • Must be able to demonstrate responsibility, dependability and good communication skills.
  • Maintain a positive attitude.
  • Other duties as assigned.
