About The Position

The Camp Counselor at YMCA of the North is a seasonal, full-time role focused on providing a fun and interactive summer experience for children and families. The counselor is responsible for planning, leading, and implementing various programs and activities that promote the YMCA's core values. This position requires a passion for working with youth, creativity in developing engaging activities, and a commitment to ensuring a safe and supportive environment for all campers.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Adult and Pediatric First Aid & CPR/AED certification (can be obtained upon hire).
  • Education classes or experience in camp, youth programs, recreation, or working with children.
  • Ability to lead, plan, organize, and implement program activities for all age levels.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team with minimal supervision.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in outdoor education or recreational activities.
  • Creative skills for developing engaging camp activities.
  • Previous experience working with diverse groups of children.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers in their camper group within activities and throughout the camp.
  • Apply Social Emotional Learning concepts and basic youth development principles in working with campers.
  • Communicate and work with groups of all ages and skill levels, providing necessary instruction to campers.
  • Ensure campers are properly supervised at all times and implement safety guidelines and procedures.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of program activities for campers.
  • Lead or assist with the teaching of various activities such as crafts, nature, songs, games, swimming, and more.
  • Maintain high standards for health and mental health in all activities for campers.
  • Provide daily care for each camper and respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid.
  • Maintain accurate program records including incident reports and daily attendance.
  • Be a role model to campers and staff, upholding safety and security rules and procedures.
  • Communicate with families regarding participants' experiences and provide feedback as needed.
