The Database Engineer (DBE) provides technical expertise across the full database lifecycle, including design, development, implementation, information storage and retrieval, data flow, and analysis. This role supports relational and object-oriented databases, database parser and loading software, and cloud-based data storage and retrieval solutions. The DBE works primarily at the front end of the system lifecycle-from requirements development through system acceptance testing and Initial Operational Capability (IOC)-ensuring database architectures align with overall system design and performance requirements. The position requires balancing tradeoffs across data volume, user concurrency, logical and physical distribution, response times, retention policies, and security controls. Key Responsibilities: Support and lead database design, development, implementation, information storage and retrieval, data flow, and analysis activities. Develop and maintain relational and object-oriented databases, database parser software, and database loading software. Develop short- and long-term requirements for database administration and design from project inception through completion. Translate business and technical requirements into usable database schemas by creating and maintaining ad hoc queries, scripts, macros, and master data files. Lead and direct the development of database structures that integrate into the overall system architecture. Make architectural tradeoffs involving data volume, number of users, logical and physical distribution, response times, data retention rules, and security and domain controls. Analyze and evaluate system improvements, optimization opportunities, development efforts, and maintenance activities. Direct fulfillment and organization of database-related requirements across simple to complex systems. Lead the development of complex systems using queries, tables, Open Database Connectivity (ODBC), and cloud-based database storage and retrieval methodologies. Provide technical guidance throughout requirements development, system integration, acceptance testing, and IOC.
