About The Position

The Database Engineer II partners closely with Production DBAs and application development teams to ensure databases are deployed to be secure, scalable, and performant. This role combines traditional DBA operational expertise with hands-on engineering skills, including data pipelines, performance analysis, query optimization, and refactoring database code to resolve systemic issues. This role requires the ability to support a hybrid database environment across on-premise and cloud solutions. This role also serves as the direct backup for the Production DBA, ensuring continuity of operations and coverage for production support activities.

  • S. in Information Technology, Computer Science or equivalent skills work experience
  • 3+ years of hands-on SQL Server Relational modeling, database development and T-SQL scripting experience
  • 3+ years working in SQL Server Database DDL, DML and concepts (table, triggers, views, procedures, functions, packages, ...), T-SQL languages Management Studio, Data extraction using SSIS, and Reports development using SSRS.
  • 3+ years experience administering databases and backup solutions
  • 3+ years Development experience using SSIS and SSRS Integration Services
  • Experience with database version control through GITHUB
  • Demonstrated technical excellence working to support scientific user base to engage in problem solving and finding proactive solutions
  • Proven track record of leading database transformation and development project through to successful implementation
  • Significant SQL Server database test development and performance tuning experience
  • Proficiency in technical writing, documenting solutions, and communicating with clients and users.

Responsibilities

  • Design and support database deployments across enterprise architectures, from single-node systems with local storage to clustered and SAN-based platforms for HA/DR and scalability, and also cloud hosted (Azure) database solutions.
  • Collaborate with IT and business stakeholders to plan upgrades, patches, and maintenance activities, including regression testing and coordinated downtime.
  • Support cloud-based database solutions on Azure, including managed services, storage, performance features, and integrations with analytics or AI/ML workloads.
  • Install, configure, patch, and maintain Microsoft SQL Server environments supporting multiple use cases (application databases, data lake, reporting, and custom development).
  • Support environments across the SDLC (Development, UAT, Production) and integrate database changes into CI/CD pipelines.
  • Manage database versioning and schema changes to ensure compatibility with applications and deployment workflows.
  • Implement and enforce database security best practices, including access controls, encryption in transit and at rest, and compliance with organizational standards.
  • Maintain expertise across multiple SQL Server versions, native tooling, and relevant third-party products.
  • Act as the primary backup for the Production DBA, providing full coverage for production database administration, incident response, and operational support.
  • Perform proactive capacity planning to ensure database availability, growth readiness, and cost efficiency.
  • Monitor database health and performance, identifying trends and systemic issues rather than only point-in-time failures.
  • Leverage database monitoring and observability tools (e.g., Redgate Monitor, SentryOne) to diagnose performance issues, analyze workload behavior, and proactively identify risk.
  • Partner with Production DBAs to provide escalation support for complex performance and stability issues.
  • Troubleshoot issues spanning database engines, application workloads, and development tools.
  • Participate in after-hours or weekend support for planned releases, maintenance, or critical incidents as needed.
  • Design, implement, and validate backup, restore, and recovery strategies.
  • Administer database objects including tables, indexes, views, stored procedures, functions, and replication technologies.
  • Configure and maintain database replication solutions to ensure downstream systems and reporting databases remain synchronized.
  • Manage database users, roles, and privileges in alignment with security and audit requirements.
  • Act as a database subject-matter expert for development teams during design, build, and release phases.
  • Review database designs and T-SQL code for performance, scalability, maintainability, and adherence to standards.
  • Identify inefficient queries, indexing strategies, and data access patterns using execution plans, DMVs, and performance metrics.
  • Refactor and optimize T-SQL code to resolve performance bottlenecks and reduce operational risk in production.
  • Perform impact analysis for schema and code changes, including data volume, execution cost, and concurrency considerations.
  • Collaborate with developers and architects to influence application design decisions that affect database performance.
  • Support release planning to ensure database changes are delivered safely with minimal production impact.
  • Demonstrate strong proficiency in writing, analyzing, and tuning complex T-SQL, including stored procedures, functions, and set-based solutions.
  • Actively promotes GUEST customer service standards; develops effective relationships at all levels of the organization.
  • Help define and evolve database development standards that ensure integrity, security, performance, and long-term maintainability.
  • Contribute to team-based problem solving and knowledge sharing; mentor developers and junior DBAs where appropriate.
  • Perform all duties in accordance with company policies, procedures, and compliance requirements.
  • Maintain regular, reliable attendance and availability consistent with operational responsibilities.
