The Database Administrator position at the City of Tucson’s Information Technology Department is responsible for supporting the design, implementation, and maintenance of critical database systems, ensuring the integrity, security, and performance of organizational databases. This position collaborates with cross-functional teams to develop solutions aligned with evolving business needs, applying best practices and technical expertise to advance departmental goals. Work is performed under the supervision of the Information Technology Manager. This position does not supervise.

  • Designs and architects database systems, data models, integrations, and automation scripts based on evolving business and technical requirements, with a current focus on Structured Query Language (SQL) Server and an eye toward future cloud-based solutions using Amazon Web Services (AWS) data services.
  • Develops and implements secure data ingestion pipelines; evaluates and selects appropriate tools and technologies aligned with organizational standards and goals.
  • Manages and maintains database upgrades, patches, migrations, and installations in collaboration with cross-functional teams, ensuring security best practices and enabling enhanced business functionality.
  • Monitors database performance and interfaces, prioritizes and remediates incidents based on urgency and impact, and optimizes configurations for scalability and efficiency.
  • Develops and executes comprehensive backup and recovery strategies to protect critical data and ensure system resiliency.
  • Creates and maintains detailed operational documentation, including architecture diagrams, data flows, change logs, security configurations, technical specifications, and knowledge base references.

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Three (3) of relevant experience.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of experience as a Database Administrator, Data Engineer, or in a related role.
  • Strong experience managing Microsoft SQL Server databases, including performance tuning, high availability configurations, and backup and recovery strategies.
  • Experience with cloud-native database services, including Amazon RDS, Aurora, DynamoDB, and other NoSQL technologies.
