About the Role The Data Platform Mission aims to empower the organization to access and use data to answer important questions, power user experiences, and to make strategic decisions that create value across the organization. We are looking for a Data Taxonomist that can help develop a new function within Data Platform that focuses on supporting our most critical data assets across The New York Times data domains. You will partner with many different teams and roles to develop data products, event tracking, data models, and data taxonomies. This role is based in our New York City office in Times Square.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of developing taxonomies and information architecture for front-end and back-end use cases
  • 3+ years working with data taxonomies, data management, or data governance
  • Expertise with JSON, YAML, relational data modeling, and other data modeling languages and tools
  • 2+ years of working with event-based and behavioral/engagement data, including designing and managing event tracking plans
  • Program management skills with organized and transparent working style
  • 2+ years of experience working with product teams, data engineers, data scientists, and analysts to manage their data
  • Excellent skills using SQL, Python, and other data wrangling tools and languages
  • Applied knowledge of industry-leading data governance, quality, and data management practices and tools

  • Proficiency with GCP, AWS, or other big data environments

Responsibilities

  • Provide frameworks, training, and guidance to individuals across the organization to define data taxonomies and models
  • Establish data management frameworks that provide clear recommendations and requirements for data producers, while also working with data platform team to integrate into capabilities
  • Embed and work with data platform teams to build governance into core capabilities
  • Develop and maintain an enterprise data taxonomy that classifies and categorizes data across business domains, ensuring consistency and usability
  • Create standards and processes for consistent labeling, categorization, and tagging of The NYT data
  • Maintain and oversee data catalog with accurate definitions, business logic/rules, and metadata for different data elements
  • Establish and enforce standard data models for events and tracking across engagement data, ensuring event consistency and use in event tracking implementations across the organization
  • Develop processes to maintain and evolve data taxonomies and data models that allow us to pilot and iteratively test data models/taxonomies using data
  • Run and provide oversight for any governance or data councils (ex: metrics council)
  • Advocate for information architecture best practices across the organization
  • Establish master data management
  • Maintain, update, and evolve our enterprise data and metrics catalogs in partnership with domain data analysts
  • Identify evolving data needs across domains, extending and evolving the data taxonomy and models
  • Collaborate with different teams to understand domain needs, maintain data models, and oversee the implementation of data governance standards
  • Improve data quality, identifies issues, and develops solutions to comply with regulatory requirements
  • Document data management standards and supports business stewards i
  • Assist teams with event tracking support and understanding
  • Monitor domains with KPIs of data governance, quality, integration, security, and analytics
  • Develop domain-specific documentation such as Data Use Cases and Data Flow Diagrams
  • Provide support and training to the business regarding data governance and modeling
