About The Position

The Office of School Health is seeking a Data Scientist that will play a key role in efforts to improve public health surveillance among New York City public school students, including by supporting efforts to enhance data linkage and integration. This person will work under the supervision of a Research Scientist and the guidance of the Senior Statistician/Surveillance Director of the Data Science and Research Unit in the Office of School Health. The Data Scientist will also work closely with unit members on efforts to identify and maintain a large set of risk indicators to optimize health risk identification among the student population. These analytic and technical efforts will directly support the development and expansion of data resources and inform an understanding of the delivery of services to school-aged children necessary to evaluate student health and educational outcomes.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in public health, epidemiology, statistics, data science, economics, or a related field preferred. Bachelor`s degree required.
  • Experience applying statistical and/or epidemiologic methods to administrative data, including educational and health outcome data, modeling and causal inference methods.
  • Past research experience. Knowledge of research and evaluation methods.
  • Experience with statistical programming software such as SAS, R, PYTHON, or STATA and other tools such as SQL.
  • Specific training or project experience in evaluation, statistics, causal inference, educational measurement, or public health.
  • Experience working on a technical team, with some project management experience. Strong analytical, organizational and communication skills.
  • Curiosity and a desire to learn, excellent writing and speaking ability, and strong interpersonal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Under technical supervision and in coordination with project management efforts, serve as a primary analyst for efforts to determine the impact of program access on health and educational outcomes for school-aged children. Assisting in the design and implementation of surveillance projects, performing analysis, and reporting findings in manuscripts, official reports, and conference presentations.
  • Contribute to data linkage efforts essential to maintaining and expanding the Student Population Health Registry, including by implementing data matching processes to support public health surveillance.
  • Provide technical expertise to research design, data acquisition and management, and development of statistical/epidemiological modeling within a causal framework to characterize the impact of educational program access on children’s health.
  • As needed, provide technical expertise in Data Science to OSH programs, including the development of causal and predictive models.
  • As necessary, developing new approaches to utilize OSH’s integrated data system to characterize health risk among children. Extending these methods for use in program and policy evaluation. Contributing to the code base for the public health surveillance within OSH data systems.
  • Other duties as assigned to support the overall goals and mission of the department/organization.
