About The Position

The Data Scientist position at the Council of State Governments (CSG) Justice Center is crucial for developing research-driven strategies aimed at enhancing public safety and strengthening communities. This role involves collecting, analyzing, and visualizing criminal justice system data to support policymakers in making informed decisions. The data scientist will work with diverse stakeholders to translate complex data into actionable insights, thereby contributing to the Justice Counts Initiative.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in data science, data visualization, computer science, business analytics, statistics, mathematics, or related field.
  • At least five years of professional experience with data or an equivalent combination of professional and advanced educational experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in applying data science methods to real-world data problems.
  • Experience utilizing visualization tools to manage large volumes of information.
  • Familiarity with quality assurance techniques and reproducible research processes.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and critical thinking skills.
  • Knowledge of the R programming language (proficiency not required).
  • Knowledge of criminal justice systems, public policy, or similar entities.
  • Knowledge of scientific research methods and statistical concepts.

  • Experience with data visualization tools and techniques.
  • Familiarity with public service and nonpartisan work environments.

Responsibilities

  • Pull, manipulate, and structure criminal justice data utilizing tables within different data sources.
  • Coordinate research and analytic activities utilizing various data points and employ programming to clean and organize the data.
  • Translate data into actionable dashboards using visualization tools and present findings to various audiences.
  • Provide data visualizations (reports and dashboards) to support stakeholder requirements.
  • Analyze existing reports to improve performance and develop new reports using best data visualization practices.
  • Work with multiple complex data sources and a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Implement processes that improve data quality and work across multiple projects simultaneously.
